Occupational Summary
The Assistant Vice President for Trinity College and The Graduate School reports to the Senior Associate Vice President of Alumni Engagement and Development and serves as a member of his/her engagement and development team.
Provide strategic input and direction related to resourcing the academic priorities of the Dean of Trinity College that span its three divisions of Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences as well as Undergraduate Education.
In addition, the Assistant Vice President will play a critical role in aligning and influencing centrally based fundraisers and engagement officers to advance strategic priorities related to the core needs of Trinity College's undergraduate and graduate education support, that includes but is not limited to the Annual Fund, faculty support, financial aid, and capital projects in support of the research and educational aspirations of its 32 departments and 6 programs.
The Assistant Vice President will be responsible for developing comprehensive gift opportunities and engagement strategies that leverage campus partners and other academic leaders to support the highest aspirations of Duke. This person will aim to build a more diverse prospect/donor pool that is representative of the larger campus demographics with the end desire of raising larger and more strategically important gifts inspired by a fully engaged community of alumni, friends and parents of Trinity College.
Work Performed
Serve as a member of the senior staff for Trinity College and The Graduate School participating in strategic planning and priority setting at both the College and School level. Work with the Deans and their respective cabinets to establish fundraising priorities, both in regards to long-term planning, year to year operations and when necessary, the creation of special initiatives and campaigns.
Provide managerial guidance to the Director of Development for The Graduate School, who serves as the primary senior staff member representative for The Graduate School.
Serve as a senior member of Alumni Engagement and Development, collaborating on overall development strategies for Duke while educating colleagues on the unique perspectives of schools and units as it relates to the acute and ongoing resource needs within these areas. In consultation with deans and the Directors of Development for Trinity and The Graduate School, set the fundraising goals for both Trinity College and The Graduate School.
Work closely and strategically with the Assistant Vice President of Development for Duke Science and Technology, the provost, the dean, faculty, and other development colleagues on comprehensive strategies to drive science-based fundraising in Trinity College and across all of Duke. This includes focusing acutely on pipeline identification, faculty engagement, graduate fellowships, branding and communication, strategic planning, case development, and stewardship.
Engage deeply with fundraisers on priorities that advance arts and the humanities as well as the social sciences; this includes but is not limited to collaborating with colleagues across the University to champion support of interdisciplinary initiatives that map to these two divisions.
Manage a portfolio of approximately 75 prospects with a focus on leadership and principal gifts.
Serve on prospect teams for members of the Trinity College Board of Visitors, Duke Financial Economics Steering Committee, The Graduate School Board of Visitors, and any other boards that may be developed in support of Trinity and The Graduate School's missions.
Develop and disseminate information about development priorities and related gift opportunities for the priority areas within Trinity College and The Graduate School.
Serve as a content expert to Major Gifts and Principal Gifts colleagues for specialized gift opportunities in response to donor interest.
Collaborate with Major Gifts and Principal Gifts colleagues in identifying key prospects for engagement and solicitation within Trinity College and The Graduate School.
Collaborate with colleagues on strategies ensuring the most effective deployment of the deans, faculty leadership, the president, the provost and vice president for alumni engagement and development.
Coordinate both on-campus activity and advancement travel for deans and directors.
Work with the Dean of Trinity College and his or her cabinet to manage the Trinity College Board of Visitors with a focus on recruitment, on- boarding, board organization, committee structure, strategy deployment, engagement and leadership.
Manage the global team of colleagues and staff to create meaningful board experiences for all members.
Manage and supervise the Director of Development for Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, as well as provide guidance to his or her team, for the purpose of determining priorities and setting fundraising and engagement goals for the College, the Trinity Board of Visitors and any other board, committee or task forces established for the specific purpose of supporting Arts and Sciences across its three academic divisions as well as undergraduate education and graduate education.
Manage and supervise the Director of Development for The Graduate School, as well as provide guidance to his or her team, for the purpose of determining fundraising and engagement goals for the School, its Graduate Board of Visitors and all other boards, committees and task forces established for the specific purpose of supporting The Graduate School.
Manage and supervise the Assistant Director for Administration and Operations, the Assistant Director of Communications, and the Staff Associate who supports the Assistant Vice President for Trinity College and The Graduate School.
Manage personnel actions pertaining to Trinity College and The Graduate School, including the recruitment, hiring and on-boarding of staff and the initiation of performance evaluations.
Provide board, committee and task force oversight in partnership with faculty leadership in terms of governance, engagement and the establishment of fundraising priorities as determined by the Dean and/or his or her leadership cabinet.
Manage board committee structures, including the on-boarding of volunteers and the training of volunteer leadership to support the implementation of School/College-based strategic initiatives and academic plans.
Prepare budgets and projected annual expenses for departmental operations specific to Trinity College and The Graduate School.
Prepare operating plans for use in Alumni Engagement and Development and in support of Trinity College and The Graduate School, including campaign and special initiative fundraising.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor's degree required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Experience
Ten years of fundraising experience with a successful track record in major and principal gifts and project management. Campaign experience is desirable, as is knowledge of and experience with science fundraising. Familiarity with research universities including a history of working in complex organizations is preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills as well as good organizational skills are essential. This position requires frequent travel.
Experience leading teams of fundraisers.
