Occupational Summary

Supervise, plan and coordinate a variety of activities in the Biology Greenhouses to provide and maintain controlled environmental conditions for botanical research and teaching collection cultivation.

Work Performed

Supervise, plan and coordinate a variety of activities in the Biology Greenhouses to provide and maintain controlled environmental conditions for botanical research and teaching collection cultivation.

Schedule work for non professional staff, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.

Ensure the utilization of proper methods in the propagation, transplanting and care of plants and preparation of soil compositions.

Confer with researchers during the planning stages of experiments to identify appropriate horticultural procedures and methods to support specialized genetic and physiological botanical research and to provide information concerning the feasibility of various research methods within the environment of the Greenhouse facility.

Coordinate the assignment of space for each project and ensure maximum and efficient usage of facility to adequately meet the researchers needs.

Monitor botanical specimens and identify and diagnose problems related to control systems, cultural disease, and insect infestation.

Ensure that problems are corrected or recommend modifications to the experiment to ensure minimum damage to specimens and optimum results.

Apply pesticides and oversee pesticide application program.

Use bio rational, biocontrol pest control system as seen fit to application.

Assist in the preventive maintenance and quality control programs for the Greenhouse facility in the areas of horticultural methods and environmental control systems.

Monitor the operation of the master console to regulate climatic conditions within assigned houses.

Supervise day to day preventive maintenance and repair activities on mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration equipment.

Make budget projections and recommendations; prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, and vacation schedules; train employees in the day to day maintenance of botanical specimens.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires broad knowledge of plants and plant science normally acquired through a Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany or a related field.

Experience

Work requires one year experience in a botanical research environment to acquire knowledge of horticultural procedures to support botanical research and usage, and repair and maintenance of controlled environment equipment.
