Occupational Summary
The Director for PK-20 Education provides overall strategic direction and management of current and new educational initiatives to further the creation and scaling of PK-20 education at Duke University. Provide strategic educational leadership within PK-20, and serves as primary liaison across Duke University and external partners to discover, develop, and deliver experiential educational opportunities in this space.
The Director is responsible for the central coordination of all educational functions and activities of the unit, overseeing both summer and year-round programs, including credit-bearing summer session and matriculation of non-traditional students. They provide leadership and direction for change management initiatives, project management, and program development on behalf of PK-20 education. In collaboration with team leads, provide strategic and timely advice and guidance to senior leadership to ensure success in the overall management of the educational mission of PK-20 programs. The Director represents PK-20 education in internal and external interactions with staff, committees, external representatives and community leaders. This position requires balancing and influencing multiple competing priorities and individuals and expects a sincere commitment to quality, affordability, and accessibility.
Work Performed
Oversee the strategic development, implementation and scaling of current and future university wide initiatives related to PK-20 education. Lead strategy for discovering, developing, and delivering new methods, practices, and frameworks related to delivering and scaling PK-20 education across Duke University and beyond.
Collaborate and cultivate relationships with other comparable universities to explore best practices for program development, as well as opportunities for partnerships across universities.
Provide management and oversight of student records and files ensuring that records and data are maintained in accordance with university policies and federal and state regulations. Work in tandem with the Director of Youth Protection to ensure ongoing compliance with Duke Minors Policy.
Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress in meeting the educational goals of PK-20 programs, noting positive impacts, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations and conclusions. Serve as a member of the senior leadership group in the formation of strategy, policies and best practices to guide the work of Learning Innovation. Including identifying funding opportunities to support educational programs, promoting educational opportunities and program success, determining fiscal requirements, budgetary recommendations and reconciliation.
Manage short- and long-term critical priorities, initiatives and activities identified by VP and AVP. Represent the interests and priorities of PK-20 education through effective communication, coordination and integration of objectives such as scaling PK-20 education across Duke and increasing participation of underrepresented individuals within Duke's PK-20 programs.
Supervise assigned staff and educational programs. Provide leadership for staff recruitment, hiring, continuous learning, supervision, retention, and evaluation.
Collaborate with senior leaders, schools, and initiatives to advocate and connect departments across university to develop research, resources and toolkits focusing on PK-20 education. Represent PK-20 education on campus-wide committees and initiatives. Uphold the importance of PK-20 programs in the lifetime education continuum and talent pipeline.
Serve as a resource, instructor, and consultant to faculty, staff and students. Foster strategic internal and external partnerships students, deans, directors, department heads, faculty, administrators, staff, parents, and alumni. Establish partnerships with governmental, for- profit, and non-profit organizations and Durham community members. Examples of partnerships can include increasing interdisciplinary collaborations across Duke, participatory research and education with local community, creating learning opportunities for additional sources of revenue to PK-20 Education.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work requires ten years experience in continuing education, curriculum development, counseling or other related higher education, administrative management or business capacity in order to acquire skills necessary to assist in planning, directing and coordinating various activities associated with educational counseling and the development of a variety of institutes, seminars, conferences, workshops and short courses.
