Occupational Summary
The Assistant Dean for International Studies will provide strategic advice to the Associate Deans for International Studies and Career and Professional Development. The position will assist with leadership of the LLM experience at Duke Law School and the international experience for JD and JD-LLM students. The position reports to the Associate Dean for International Studies and is an integral member of the International Studies team. The position also reports to the Associate Dean for the Career Center in connection with the career development responsibilities and is also an integral member of the Career Center team.
Work Performed
Lead the student employment program for internationally oriented students, including LLM's, JD LLM's, and JD's.
Counsel all international LLM students and internationally oriented JD and JD/LLM students on career development.
Build, deepen and track relationships with internationally oriented organizations, both in the United States and abroad.
Engage alumni and other contacts to leverage reach.
Utilize high level relationships to place students in opportunities abroad during 1L summer.
Provide leadership for the LLM Experience at Duke.
Work with Student Affairs and Alumni Affairs offices to develop programming for LLM students at Duke, including all extracurricular integration activities, speaker series, and conference or symposia.
Administers the Duke in Geneva Institute, and is responsible for successful functioning of the institute in addition to maintaining other ongoing duties.
Serve as Resident Administrative Director for overseas program.
Develop schedule of extracurricular talks and visits to international organizations.
Oversee operating budget for Geneva program.
Work with Associate Deans and team members to develop new marketing and recruiting strategies for international students and to enhance overall international experience, and programs and opportunities for students.
Recruit, review, and admit LLM applicants from a portfolio of countries.
Represent the Law School to non US universities and legal groups abroad.
Establish contacts and travel to those countries for recruitment purposes.
Lead the Law School's relationship with the International Alumni Board.
Coordinate with Alumni Office to identify international alumni for recruitment, career development, and fundraising purposes.
Assist with organizing international alumni recruitment and fundraising events.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires a JD degree in order to be able to achieve productive relationships with students and to understand and implement complex University and Law School academic requirements, policies and procedures.
Experience
Minimum of three years of relevant work experience is required, six or more years is highly preferred. Demonstrated international experience is required; knowledge of second or more languages would be highly valued. Career counseling or career development experience in a law school or legal personnel/professional development role in a public service organization is strongly preferred. Supervisory or management experience is preferred. Experience in private practice, corporate legal or business experience, or similar work would be valued.
