Occupational Summary

The Executive Director is the principle executive officer for the Duke Lemur Center and provides leadership through specialized knowledge and is responsible for operations, policy marking, funding, planning, organizing and staffing.

Work Performed

Lead the operations of the DLC and its major functions of animal care and welfare, non-invasive research, student engagement, education, conservation, fundraising, budget development and administration, along with university and community collaboration and engagement.

Implement policy in collaboration with the senior staff and university leadership.

Represent the DLC to the greater community locally, nationally and internationally through attendance at special events and delivering presentations.

Oversee the specialized activities of colony planning (living, frozen and fossilized), development and maintenance of critical infrastructure necessary to support a colony of endangered primates, in situ and ex situ conservation programs, and specialized programs designed to safely engage students and community members.

Collaborate with department heads and university officials to formulate long-range plans and develop strategies and organize resources to meet identified objectives.

Play a leading role in fundraising for short and long-term operational and capital needs; maintain and establish regular contact with current and potential donors, foundations, and government agencies.

Determine fiscal requirements, identify and grow needed sources of revenue, as well as, monitor and reconcile expenditures to maintain a balanced budget; plan capital improvements.

Collaborate with other university officials and departments and partner with community leaders in the development of joint programs and services.

Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to: hiring, merit recommendations, promotions and transfers necessary to identify, recruit, develop and retain a talented and diverse staff to meet the evolving needs of the DLC.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Position requires analytical, organizational and communications skills generally acquired through completion of a Master's degree in a related field (e.g. biology, zoology, anthropology).

Experience

Position requires 7 years related experience. Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Skills

Demonstrated excellence in staff management; familiarity with budgetary planning and oversight; and strong organizational skills
