Occupational Summary

Manage all public interest student organizations and pro bono programs within the Law School. Counsel students in public interest job search strategies. Manage endowed public interest summer fellowships and application process.

Work Performed

Manage all public interest student organizations and pro bono programs within the Law School, expanding, revising and developing new programming as appropriate.

This includes strategically developing and sustaining a network of alumni, employers, and institutions to generate public interest, public service and pro bono opportunities for students.

Develop and strengthen organizational ties through special public interest and pro bono projects that build upon and fortify student involvement in overlapping and complementary areas including but not limited to Duke Law School Clinics, International Studies, and Centers & Programs.

Provide supervision to Director of Public Interest & Pro Bono and Coordinator of Public Interest & Pro Bono.

Counsel students in public interest job search strategies, self assessment, goal setting, networking, interviewing and general professionalism.

Collaborate closely with Career Center team by educating students about public interest and government career and professional development opportunities, including summer internships, externships, grants, and post graduate fellowships.

Developing and implementing strategies to successfully engage students in the public interest and government job search process.

Participating in Career Center team meetings to address support for students in their individual career goals, supporting general programming and activities, and educating colleagues about developments or opportunities in public service, participating in team events.

Manage endowed public interest summer fellowships and application process.

Create post graduate fellowships to support and encourage students to pursue public interest employment at graduation.

Participate and collaborate with additional school constituencies regarding public interest programs for Duke Law School, including but not limited to: the Office of Admissions & Financial Aid for recruitment of public interest focused prospective students; educational debt management and loan forgiveness.

The Office of Alumni & Development to identify, cultivate and solicit gifts from various prospects to develop their interest and participation in fund raising for post graduate fellowships, and public interest and pro bono projects.

Facilitate increased integration of public interest focused students, alumni in public interest employment or private sector employment with significant pro bono commitment, and non profit and government partners into the law school community.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

JD degree is required.

Experience

A minimum of three years of relevant work experience is required, six or more years is highly preferred. Work as a public interest or government attorney, or similar/related experience demonstrating a commitment to public service, is required. Career counseling or career development experience in a law school or legal personnel/professional development role in a public service organization is strongly preferred. Supervisory or management experience is preferred. Experience in private practice, corporate legal or business experience, or similar work would be valued.
