Occupational Summary

The Artist-in-Residence is an acknowledged expert in an artistic field (music, visual arts, drama, dance, poetry, liturgics) whose work enhances the worship life and programmatic offerings of Duke University Chapel. The title of the position may be adapted to more accurately reflect the field of the visiting artist (e.g., Poet-in-Residence, Composer-in-Residence). Specific projects, programs, and hours are determined based upon the skills of the individual and the needs of the Chapel. The Artist-in-Residence is an exempt, limited-term position, with possibility for renewal.

Work Performed

Develop, design, coordinate and implement production strategy for Chapel Music programs including performances, special Sunday morning arts collaborations and large scale events such as community sing alongs, choir reunions and concert tours in the U.S. and abroad.

Create and organize special arts in the Chapel.

Advise regarding technical assistance needs and coordinate and supervise production arrangements.

Interface with administrators and directors of University and community organizations to plan and organize joint productions.

Conduct rehearsals, services and performances of the Duke Chapel Choir in the absence of the Director of Chapel Music, when two conductors are needed, during warm ups and final run throughs before special services and events, and at other times as needed.

Conduct ensemble for special services in Duke Chapel.

Assist with repertoire selection, translations, editing, service planning, and preparation of orders of worship.

Select hymns and anthems for summer choir and weekly vespers services.

Develop annual schedule of Chapel Music events and rehearsals.

Select, contract with, and/or coordinate arrangements for guest musicians, vocal soloists, liturgical dancers and visual artists, and integrate them into Chapel services and special programs; recruit singers for ensembles.

Coordinate hospitality arrangements for guest musicians and benefactors. Develop and administer annual operating budget.

Monitor use of endowment earnings.

Develop and submit funding proposals to foundations and individuals for special programming and concert tours.

Identify and cultivate endowment donor prospects.

Draft materials and supervise publicity for Chapel Music and Arts in Duke Chapel events.

Supervise ticket sales, promotion, and accounting for Chapel Choir performances and special Chapel sponsored programs.

Teach new member classes in music theory, history and sight singing.

Present lectures related to Chapel Music performances.

Coach students requesting special assistance.

Coordinate alumni reunions; write and edit newsletters and public service notices.

Supervise various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a high-level of artistic skill and expertise generally acquired through completion of advanced degree(s) in the relevant field of study.

Experience

A significant, documentable work history (minimum 5 years) in positions relevant/related to the field.
