Occupational Summary
The Associate Director of the Duke Center for Civic Engagement and the Community Service Center reports to the Director and is responsible for coordinating various aspects of DukeEngage programming, strategic planning for the DCCE and links to community service in Durham. This person will combine a deep familiarity with civic engagement and higher education and also have the administrative skills and experience to coordinate processes and procedures for the smooth operation of DCCE.
Work Performed
Providing strategic, tactical and operational advice to the Director on all aspects of the development of the DCCE and DukeEngage.
Represent the Director in his absence with key internal and external constituencies.
Overseeing the conceptualization and implementation of evaluation and assessment protocols for DukeEngage, serving as the primary liaison with external consultants and internal Duke resources in this area.
Working closely with the Director and the Associate Director of Finance and Administration, implementing and monitoring a system to code and track DukeEngage students within the Duke student systems.
Coordinating University wide efforts to catalog and document civic engagement work at Duke, including for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
Setting and implementing travel policy, choosing and coordinating travel vendor, working with vendor and DukeEngage programs and individuals to approve and purchase tickets.
Leading and managing the DukeEngage Durham program, including recruiting community partners, students and overall oversight of program.
Serve as primary liaison with other DukeEngage Durham programs, including Hart Leadership.
Coordinating the DCCEs contractual and risk abatement obligations, working with programs to assess, address and minimize risk.
This includes working with the Office of Risk Management, University Counsel and Student Health to insure the health and safety of students, faculty and staff who participate in DukeEngage.
Serve as the primary liaison with Student Affairs particularly where their activities touch on civic engagement.
With the Director, serve as the primary liaison with other major civic engagement units on campus, including the Office of Service Learning, Community Affairs and the Duke Durham Neighborhood Partnership (DDNP).
Manage the activities of the Community Service Center to include formulating and administering policies, developing and implementing fund raising strategies, and supervise Center programs.
Direct and supervise various programs for Duke University students to provide summer and academic year volunteer, work study, and internship opportunities with a community service learning focus; identify, develop and evaluate service opportunities with appropriate organizations and agencies locally and nationwide.
Direct the activities of a student oriented volunteer clearinghouse; formulate and administer policies and practices consistent with University goals for promoting constructive campus involvement in the Durham community.
Develop and implement fund raising strategies to support volunteer and paid service learning and research opportunities.
Determine fiscal requirements of the programs of the Community Service Community and prepare budgetary recommendations.
Prepare grant proposals and meet with potential donors as necessary.
Recommend various personnel actions for staff of Community Service Center including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program. Master's degree preferred.
Experience
Five to ten years of applicable experience required.
OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
Skills
Excellent organizational and communication skills; Strong writing skills; Ability to function and multitask under deadline; Familiarity with international travel issues; Familiar with Durham and local communities
