Occupational Summary

Direct the creative, production and business operations of University Photography to provide a comprehensive, ongoing program to serve the University's photographic needs.

Work Performed

Direct all creative, production and business operations of University Photography to include supervision of the performance of all photographic, technical and clerical functions; serve as the Universitys principal creative photographer.

Manage University Photography's interactions with the news media, working closely with the directors and staffs of various communications and publications offices at Duke to provide appropriate photographs for news releases and campus publications and to ensure quality control in supporting and complementing their activities; ensure appropriate response to the medias needs for photographs of the University and its community.

Develop, implement and coordinate a broad based marketing effort to promote photographic services as a critical graphic element to schools and departments throughout the University and to distribute photographic images of the University for use by the news media; market University Photographys services for use in internal and external books, magazines, brochures, directories, guides, calendars and other publications.

Develop and implement strategies for advising clients on most effective methods for using photographic services for maximum effect; direct the provision of appropriate counseling and advising on artistic and creative use of photographic images.

Plan and direct a comprehensive and ongoing program to capture on film images representing all aspects of University life, utilizing state of the art technology and creativity.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Determine fiscal requirements, prepare budgetary recommendations and establish unit cost pricing of services for University Photography.

Direct various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules; promote professional development for University Photography staff.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of photographic principles and techniques usually acquired through a bachelor's degree in Photography or a related field.

Experience

Work generally requires five years experience as a professional photographer or related field to acquire artistic and creative skills in all aspects of black and white and color photography, printing and processing and the ability to manage a full service photography function in an educational institution.
