Occupational Summary

Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned shift for the Duke University Public Safety Office.

Work Performed

Inspect units of assigned shift to ensure compliance with departmental standards and procedures and presence of personnel in assigned beats or zones; make necessary corrections on the spot through appropriate counseling, training and/or disciplinary measures; ensure operational consistency and coordination among small units and continuity of command.

Schedule and ensure delivery of required training to all personnel; attend shift and squad roll call briefings, maintain accurate training records and conduct field inspections and interviews to ensure officers know and follow appropriate procedures.

Take command and coordinate response of all Public Safety units at major incidents or emergency situations at Duke University.

Conduct internal investigations as assigned.

Assume the responsibility of the Chief of Police in his absence.

Perform various administrative duties to include reviewing and approving or ensuring correction of incident reports, ensuring accuracy of time and attendance reports and correcting or reporting supply or equipment deficiencies.

Carry out special projects as assigned.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications and analytical skills normally acquired through an associate's degree in one of the social sciences. Work requires North Carolina Company Police Certification.

Experience

Work requires a knowledge of law enforcement methods, techniques and procedures normally acquired through four years of law enforcement experience to include at least one year of supervisory experience.

A bachelor's degree in one of the social sciences may be substituted for experience on a 1:1 basis.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

North Carolina driver's license is required.
