Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Major Gifts Programs and Special Initiatives, the Director will lead the University's major gift fundraising efforts by planning, developing, and directing comprehensive major gift fundraising efforts. He or she will refine solicitation and stewardship strategies and work collaboratively across schools and units to build on Duke's fundraising success.

Work Performed

Maintain a portfolio of select major gift prospects with capacity of $100K+.

Facilitate relationships between key University trustees, the president, deans, faculty, and staff and prospects and volunteers.

Arrange fundraising calls for University leadership, including the president, provost, deans and accompany them on the calls.

Manage regional fundraising efforts to include identifying new prospective major gift donors and developing long range plans for their involvement in the University.

Provide assistance with major gift prospects assigned to other university development staff as requested and serve as a resource for development colleagues across the university.

Help foster a university wide major gift fundraising collaboration.

Provide direct supervision for Regional Major Gift Professionals; conduct monthly assessment and review meetings; and conduct formal mid year and annual evaluations.

Report on gift officer activity and fundraising status to the Assistant Vice President of Major Gifts Programs and Special Initiatives.

Assist administrators and faculty in the identification and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional priorities, programs, and events for use in development efforts.

Foster and maintain productive relationships with colleagues.

Coordinate program and prospect strategies with other University Development programs (Principal Gifts, Annual Fund, Gift Planning, and Corporate and Foundation Relations), units (Research, Donor Relations, Stewardship), and University units (Alumni Association).

Working with colleagues in the Annual Fund, create and implement a comprehensive reunion program.

Foster collaborative prospecting and fundraising between the Major Gifts Office and the Office of Gift Planning.

Assist with the development of technologically sophisticated portfolio and prospect staging tools so that Major Gifts can prioritize and monitor their work with prospects and donors.

Develop and implement plans to introduce a major gift discovery program based on results of a comprehensive data mining and wealth screening project conducted by Research.

With the AVP of Major Gifts programs and the AVP of the Annual Fund, explore the creation of a leadership giving team of fundraisers charged with high end Annual Fund asks and qualification and referral of new major gift prospects.

Develop and implement plans for the deployment of regional major gifts professionals during a campaign and/or other special initiatives.

Develop and implement plans for volunteer deployment during a campaign and /or other special initiatives.

Participate with colleagues in University Development on campaign preparation Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelors degree required; an advanced degree is preferred.

Experience

Demonstrated successful experience and effectiveness in major gift fundraising, preferably in an educational setting, for at least eight (8) to ten (10) years. A minimum of five years experience supervising senior fundraising staff, hiring fundraisers and administrative support, conducting evaluations and providing constructive feedback, and managing personnel actions.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement programs that support effective fundraising, preferably in a complex university environment; Significant experience staffing major gift volunteers; campaign volunteer management preferred; Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously; Ability to plan and implement a fundraising plan; Knowledge of Duke University highly desirable; Excellent oral and written communication skills; High level of creativity, initiative, and motivation. And the ability to travel frequently; Team orientation and willingness to provide mentoring to other major gift officers as appropriate.
