Occupational Summary

Administer the undergraduate judicial affairs or residential affairs program area within the Office of Student Development; direct and coordinate programs and activities supportive of the academic goals of Duke University and providing for the general welfare of University students.

Work Performed

JUDICIAL AFFAIRS: Administer the undergraduate judicial system to include receiving complaints, conducting investigations, determining probable cause, conducting hearings and issuing sanctions; coordinate Undergraduate Judicial Board (UJB) and administrative panel judicial proceedings; supervise recruitment, selection and training of UJB advisors and members; advise and counsel accused students and board members regarding rights and procedures; complete requests for disciplinary clearance.

RESIDENTIAL AFFAIRS: Design, implement and support a resident advisor (RA) program which effectively and sensitively meets and responds to the educational, developmental and social needs of Duke's resident undergraduate population; supervise and provide support, ongoing training, and evaluation of RA staff.

Develop and/or implement departmental and divisional policies that support a judicial and residential environment complementary to the educational mission of the University; administer and take action on specific policies as appropriate.

Serve as official representative of the University in responding to medical and judicial crisis situations involving students; ensure appropriate procedures are followed; plan and ensure implementation of appropriate interventions.

Provide counseling for students related to personal and disciplinary problems, academic performance and educational and vocational objectives; refer students to and interface with University departments for resolution of problems or complaints.

Respond to requests and questions and provide information on programs, activities and policies for students, parents, University representatives, the media and others as requested and appropriate.

Design and implement training sessions and workshops for relevant constituencies and serve as resource and advisor on an ongoing basis; prepare and/or revise various publications and written materials as appropriate; prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Represent the Office of Student Development in professional organizations/associations and on regular and ad hoc committees as appropriate.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, promotions, performance appraisals and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires analytical, organizational and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires six years experience student personnel/services, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to manage a major program area within student affairs.
