Occupational Summary

This is a senior level external gift officer position that employs gift planning and high level relationship building expertise to focus on cultivating and closing principal and leadership gifts for Duke in the form of outright and future commitments. Work with donors on creative, complex gift situations involving closely held assets or unusual assets and requiring multi faceted gift plans. Interface with donors, their advisors, Duke's Counsel's office and the Endowment Administration office.

This position reports to the Senior Assistant Vice President for Principal Gifts and is a resource partner for development leadership, including the president and vice president, members of the University Development leadership team, deans and directors as required.

Work Performed

Manage high level senior philanthropic advisory relationships within a portfolio of existing and prospective donors that number approximately 100 individuals.

Travel to visit with existing and prospective donors for cultivation, solicitation, negotiation and stewardship of complex gift plans.

Develop relationships, maintain personal contact with prospects and donors, and coordinate conversations with their attorneys and financial advisors to determine appropriate planned giving techniques that meet their philanthropic and financial goals.

Provide creative, customized gift opportunities for principal and leadership donors through drafting proposal ideas and presenting them to prospective donors of outright, deferred or split interest gifts.

Engage in high level, strategic stewardship plans for the portfolio in collaboration with the Senior Director of Gift Planning Strategies.

Represent University Development by serving on and/or leading institutional committees or task forces as appropriate; serve as a senior staff member in formulating gift policies; maintain liaison with representatives of other University offices and professional organizations.

Participate in the client service model of the University Development Gift Planning team, serving different units as they are distributed among the central team.

Serve as primary liaison with Duke Medicine Development and Alumni Affairs gift planning team to augment the resources and capacity for providing gift planning services to donors supporting Duke Health.

Work with colleagues on emerging creative and innovative ideas (such as DukeOne) to promote gift planning techniques, as well as programs that reach audiences, such as emeriti faculty, with information.

Participate in training and education efforts for university wide development staff in the areas of gift planning techniques, situations and potential assets for use in funding complex plans.

Assist in leveraging the impact of the Duke Estate Planning Council.

Contribute data for operational reports and analyses, setting forth progress, noting trends for Duke and philanthropy in general, and suggesting appropriate recommendations or conclusions to development leadership.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's Degree required; Advanced degree (JD or MBA) preferred. Legal experience or expertise in the area of estates and trusts is preferred, as is experience in tax planning and knowledge of charitable tax laws.

Experience

Ten year's experience with proven success as a front line gift planning officer.
