Occupational Summary

Manage the editorial department of Duke University Press to include supervising the editorial staff, serving as an acquisitions editor, and planning and directing the book publishing program to ensure quality and balance of book list consistent with the goals of the Press.

Work Performed

Manage the editorial department of Duke University Press to include reviewing editorial contracts and editorial packets as submitted to the Editorial Advisory board, and providing professional guidance to members of the department.

Establish goals for the editorial team; participate in Press wide planning efforts and efforts to analyze performance of the Presss editorial list.

Develop and implement policies and procedures for the acquisition, handling and transmittal of manuscripts, and in providing information about manuscripts to production, marketing, business and other Press departments and administration; represent the editorial department in discussions with managers of other Press departments and Press administrators.

Solicit, acquire and review prospective manuscripts for publication by Duke University Press; ascertain market interest in subject matter to determine if interest warrants publication; arrange for reviews of selected manuscripts by minimum of two experts in appropriate field of study.

Prepare acquisition proposals based on positive reviews of manuscripts and estimated sales potential; present recommendations to Editorial Advisory Board for approval; follow up on questions and suggestions by the Board.

Maintain liaison with authors to discuss changes in approved manuscript and ensure revisions are made adequately in response to reviewer recommendations; prepare contract, modifying as appropriate, for signature by author and Duke Press Director.

Maintain contact with other university presses, authors and reviewers to identify trends in various fields; generate ideas for book projects and solicit authors to develop projects.

Consult with other Press departments on book projects to represent the authors viewpoint within the Press and to provide editorial information.

Represent the Press at professional meetings and conventions as appropriate.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires organizational, analytical and communications skills normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of seven years editorial or marketing experience in a publishing or related setting to acquire skills necessary to perform activities associated with solicitation and acquisition of manuscripts, editorial review, assessment of manuscript marketability, and preparation of books for publication, as well as general administrative practices.
