Occupational Summary

Coordinate and perform a variety of administrative and technical activities related to preparation, stocking and management of biological laboratory courses.

Work Performed

Create and maintain a technical laboratory manual for temporary instructors, teaching assistants and lab preparatory in designated introductory lab courses to provide guidelines for conducting lab exercises, documentation of practical experience, history of technical problems and references to known solutions.

Confer with faculty to plan, develop and implement lab exercises for lab courses; plan new labs with temporary instructors; conduct and evaluate prototype labs; recommend and/or make necessary changes in materials, techniques or procedures to optimize the value of the lab exercise; attend lab planning and review sessions and participate in planning and evaluation of exercises.

Create and maintain copies of lab exercises in a suitable format for distribution to students.

Analyze classroom and lab needs; evaluate and procure equipment necessary for maintenance of lab animals and plants; develop reliable sources for and coordinate with vendors to ensure timely delivery of necessary supplies; monitor inventory.

Manage the set up, break down and maintenance of lab and associated apparatus, ensuring adequate quality control; locate repair sources; supervise the checking out of equipment and supplies to other courses.

Organize, maintain and/or expand various teaching collections; develop and prepare seeding and propagation schedules for living plants; determine and ensure optimal environment for animal survival.

Assist in renovation planning and design of new labs, prep areas, office spaces and aquarium rooms; direct the moving of all equipment, specimens and supplies and determine new locations.

Assist faculty in preparation of budget projections and recommendations.

Perform research activities in support of various courses and related labs; assist with special projects as assigned.

Manage and Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions and vacation schedules; train employees in the preparation of solutions, stains, sterile plates and solutions, and in the proper care of plants and animals.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of biological laboratory exercises, techniques and procedures generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree in Biology, Botany, Zoology or a directly related field.

Experience

Work requires 5 years of laboratory and/or management experience to acquire skills necessary to develop and implement biological laboratory exercises, supervise and instruct teaching assistants, students and lab personnel, and manage overall operations of the laboratory.
