Occupational Summary

Design, develop, and implement a public relations program to promote Duke University Medical Center body donations for the Anatomical Gifts Program. Embalm and prepare donated cadavers; assist in disposal of remains at the conclusion of lab sessions.

Work Performed

Develop, plan, coordinate, and implement a public relations program to promote and facilitate body donations to the Anatomical Gifts Program.

Actively interact with other funeral homes to educate them on ways Duke University Medical Center can benefit both parties involved; develop ways to be positively perceived by funeral homes, hospices, churches, other hospitals, and nursing homes; develop and implement ideas to enhance the relationship with donor families.

Determine ways Duke University Medical Center can monetarily compete with other medical schools with regard to funeral homes and how to become the funeral homes first choice for body donations.

Provide counseling to families concerning the donation of bodies for study; assist in filing death certificates, social security, Veterans Administration benefits, insurance claims, and other necessary paperwork; address questions and concerns of families regarding final disposition of cremated remains.

Coordinate with other funeral homes concerning the degree of embalming allowed under medical school specifications so that funeral and memorial services may be incorporated into the body donation program.

Serve as Duke University Medical Schools liaison between fellow licensed funeral directors and embalmers; keep the department informed of laws or regulations regarding anatomical gifts.

Embalm and prepare donated cadavers, as needed; assist in disposal of remains at the conclusion of lab sessions; inventory, order and stock embalming materials and supplies; provide 24 hour on call assistance for body donations and/or body acceptance.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background generally equivalent to a high school education.

Experience

Work requires the ability to design, develop, and implement a public relations program to promote donations generally acquired through five years of related experience.
