Occupational Summary

This position is responsible for the day to day operations of the Office of Budgets, Allocations, & Analysis, and reports to the Assistant Vice President, Budgets & Cost Allocations.

Work Performed

Manage department consisting of two managers and five analysts involved in the following:

Coordination of the University's annual operating budget for review and approval by the Board of Trustees.

Allocation of general & administrative expenses and distributed space costs across all Duke University companies.

Coordination of the University's year end projections for quarterly review by the Board of Trustees.

Financial analysis, fiscal oversight, and review of the Central Administration Management Center (CAMC) operating budget, providing written summaries for review by senior management and the Board of Trustees.

Development of the annual financial forecast, used as a modeling tool for determining appropriate funding levels for CAMC and the corresponding impact on the allocated costs.

Oversight of the year end closing process for all CAMC departments, ensuring accuracy and compliance to the University's accounting guidelines, and the coordination of final summaries for review by the Board of Trustees.

Coordination of the annual July 1 salary setting process for all University faculty, staff and biweekly employees.

Direct and coordinate various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires the organizational, analytical and communication skills normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program. A degree in accounting, finance, or a business related field is strongly preferred.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of six years in a financial management position, preferably in a university setting. Candidates with experience in the following areas are favorable: budget development/review; financial analysis; forecasting; and experience with the Duke University financial systems, including SAP and Business Warehouse.

Skills

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are necessary. The successful candidate must have demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to establish short term and long term priorities, interact effectively with a broad diversity of audiences and constituencies, and develop strategic approaches to problem solving. Self motivated interpersonal skills are essential in working with departmental staff and faculty. The candidate must be analytical, detail oriented, possess strong data management and technical skills as well as exhibit superior customer service and organizational skills.
