Occupational Summary

Plan, create, and manage complex design presentation for Duke University Press books and/or journals; manage design process for a portion of Press books and/or journals; create design layouts for Press books and other printed materials.

Work Performed

Plan, create, and manage complex design presentation for Duke University Press books and/or journals; conceive total design presentation for complex projects.

Manage design process for a portion of Duke University Press books.

Evaluate and interpret manuscripts to determine appropriate methods of presentation, as well as targeted audience; research design options; consult with authors, editors and marketing staff to develop design concepts, ensuring consistency throughout project.

Create design layouts, specifications and mechanicals for books and other printed materials, considering effects of printing process.

Determine cost effective solutions for incorporating figures, maps, illustrations and other designs/artwork.

Produce camera ready copy; specify size and position of photographs; analyze and select proper paper, ink, type, illustrations and printing techniques.

Monitor scheduling and overall project production; track status, updating schedule on regular basis; monitor project costs to ensure in accordance with budget limitations; ensure permissions requirements are met.

Locate and evaluate freelance artists to produce figures, maps, foreign characters and other illustrations.

Monitor quality control of projects.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires one year graphic arts or related experience to acquire considerable knowledge or skill in the methods and techniques used in complex design and layout of books, as well as an ability to analyze and interpret art needs of manuscripts and other publications.
