Occupational Summary

Provide operational, financial and organizational direction to retail operations within the Duke University Stores in the areas of merchandising, purchasing and replenishment of Duke apparel and other Duke branded merchandise, expense and loss control, profit management, personnel, budget planning and supervision in order to ensure efficient and economically sound operations.

Work Performed

Direct the overall activities of retail operations including the Duke University Store, Team Store, Clothing/Gift Concessions, Lobby Shop and other assigned areas to include merchandising, purchasing, display, sales, inventories, record keeping and preparation of pertinent financial reports.

Evaluate proposed policies and procedures and make recommendations for improving operations and financial results.

Prepare annual budget of anticipated sales, expenses, and inventories; review financial statements regularly to identify potential issues.

Develop and implement strategic operations and sales plans for assigned areas.

Manage retail IT system data and provide system training to staff as needed.

Provide leadership and planning to maximize staff performance, potential and development.

Manage the selection, ordering and replenishment of Duke apparel and other Duke branded merchandise; manage the receiving, storing, pricing, advertising, packaging, and researching of all merchandise selections.

Oversee all matters related to receiving records, invoices, transfers, shortage and damage reports, and purchase orders.

Review and assess policies, make recommendations, and implement, as appropriate.

Monitor and research industry wide shifts in the collegiate licensed apparel and other Duke branded merchandise market.

Track and analyze retail sales item data to anticipate customer needs and changes to those needs, in order to ensure adequate on hand stock as retail trends and customer demands dictate.

Oversee merchandise allocation and transfers from the distribution center to retail operations.

Review stock levels at all stores on a regular basis, ensuring timely and sufficient replenishment.

Coordinate the proper entry of order data in the POS system.

Implement a comprehensive plan to sustain a leading role in service and financial performance.

Recommend the procurement of equipment and facilities instrumental to the performance of operations.

Oversee periodic physical inventories to ensure accuracy and results within industry standards.

Meet with vendors to determine product purchase selection and quantities.

Negotiate orders with vendors, evaluate proposals, and determine best sources based on quality, services provided, costs, and other relevant criteria.

Evaluate vendor performance, resolve issues and implement solutions to enhance vendor performance.

Work with Marketing Manager and other staff on plans for conscientious execution of marketing strategies, including: floor plans and moves; sale programs; special events; product development and promotion; visual presentations; advertising; seasonal strategies; developing lay out plans for merchandise display; formulation of policies related to marketing of merchandise; and developing marketing and sales plans for Duke apparel and other Duke branded merchandise.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, and transfers.

Plan work and vacation schedules, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate staffing, space, and facilities for performance of duties.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires business, analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires ten years business and management experience and a proven successful track record in retail stores including operations, financial, merchandising, and personnel to acquire skills necessary to plan, manage and control costs and ensure profitability in a high volume, multifaceted retail enterprise, including extensive direct experience in purchasing and managing the replenishment of collegiate apparel in a high volume collegiate retail environment. Prefer extensive experience and proficiency with Sequoia retail systems.
