Occupational Summary

Plan, coordinate or participate in programs to enable University students to explore career opportunities through practical work experience; serve as expert in specialty field to include writing/publishing, making presentations to national groups, and serving as resource in area of expertise.

Work Performed

Plan, coordinate and participate in programs to enable University students to explore career opportunities through practical work experience; evaluate effectiveness of programs and implement improvements as required.

Develop and exhibit expertise in specialty field to include writing for publication within the profession, making presentations to professional groups, and serving as resource to others in area of expertise.

Establish and maintain liaison with various corporations, agencies and organizations within assigned specialty field to gain in depth knowledge of the operation and work environment, employment needs, hiring practices, academic/educational requirements/preferences and relevant trends of various companies in order to provide meaningful employment to University students and alumni; seek out and assist in developing tailored opportunities to meet specific needs of students; develop contacts in new areas to meet student and alumni needs.

Provide information to students and alumni regarding career directions and vocational opportunities; conduct information sessions, interviews, seminars and workshops, and prepare various written materials including books, pamphlets and brochures to provide program information and guidance on resume preparation, interviewing techniques and job search strategies.

Assist students and alumni in defining their educational and vocational goals and to develop career directions to fulfill those goals.

Maintain liaison with Career Advisors in the various academic departments to exchange information concerning current and future vocational opportunities.

Develop and implement communications and outreach plans for assigned career fields and/or programs as needed.

Prepare reports and analyses of career development patterns, employment trends, and curriculum/program needs, setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Train and supervise work of lower level employees, students and volunteers as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work generally requires communications, analytical and organizational skills acquired through completion of a master's degree.

Experience

Work requires one year of experience in a placement or other student services function to gain considerable knowledge of career counseling and placement programs.
