Occupational Summary

The Healthcare Facility Security Director collaboratively develops, implements,and monitors security processes in the medical environment that are consistent with regulatory and industry standards, and Duke University Campus Police Department (CP), Duke Health System and medical facility leadership expectations. This position reports to the Director, Health System Security within the CP. This position is expected to be available to monitor and manage significant security incidents at the assigned medical facilities.

Work Performed

Manage performance to ensure quality outcomes by establishing performance standards and goals for security operations, benchmarking with other agencies, understanding and meeting priorities and developing inspection and monitoring systems to check compliance. Collaboratively develop standards, considering input from officers, healthcare staff and leadership, and industry practices. Track and analyze data to inform decisions.

Develop and implement security policy and procedures in compliance with hospital policies and state and federal laws. Ensure compliance with security related standards of The Joint Commission. Also base procedures on recommendations of the International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) applicable Duke policies, etc. Assist in crafting healthcare policy.

Supervise, educate, train, and mentor healthcare security personnel.

Serve as the CP representative on various committees, keeping the Director, Health System Security informed.

Provide consultation to DUH entities on security measures and technologies in new construction or renovations that is consistent with the Health System and appropriate guidelines, such as the IAHSS.

Work collaboratively with the Director, Health System security and hospital leadership to develop consistent policy, measures, and security technologies.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with hospital leaders and director, CP, first responders, prison and jail managers, etc.

Work to reduce the risk of workplace violence among healthcare clinical staff and CP staff. Recommend and support efforts to reduce risk; serve on behavioral assessment teams.

Maintain the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information. Use and disclose only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.

Plan, coordinate and manage special events and dignitary visits.

Supervise and or conduct security programs for hospital staff and others as needed.

Work closely with Health System Emergency Management to ensure coordinated response and efforts.

Evaluate and assess physical security technologies and operational processes.

Analyze data on incidents to recommend processes to reduce harm.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications and analytical skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelors degree program or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Requires a valid North Carolina Drivers License. Preferred Education and Training: Extensive specialized experience and certification in healthcare security management through the International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) and with knowledge of the Clergy Act, HIPAA, CMS and Joint Commission requirements.

Experience

Work requires knowledge of security management/operations in a health care setting, generally acquired through four years of related experience including two years of supervisory experience.
