Work Performed

Coordinate major projects such as Glove Box News, Computing Survival Guide, Duke Telephone Directory, maintenance/creation of OIT web site, support to an OIT department or group (e.g., Tele video, Data Communications).

Propose new projects and/or major overhauls of existing projects; support the Publications and Information Design manager in determining which projects to accept, assignment of priorities and commitment of staff required to support new and ongoing projects.

Assess appropriate production modalities and venues and keep abreast of current technologies to determine which practices and purchases are most appropriate for the department.

Plan and manage projects developed by various OIT teams; assign writing tasks; coordinate multiple technical reviews; conduct project meetings and prepare regular project status reports; ensure that technical/hardware problems encountered by writers are resolved.

Assist the manager in assessing short term and long term strategies and goals that will enable the group to meet its overall mission to provide OIT an excellent public presence in print and online.

Consult with subject matter experts and/or research subject areas for writing projects; develop content and style based on characteristics of audience and how and why information will be accessed; develop appropriate organizational structure for document or set of documents.

Proofread and edit materials, applying commonly recognized editing and publishing standards to discrete elements of a document as well as assessing organization, cohesion and effectiveness of documents; shape content to ensure consistency of publications within the organization.

Utilize contemporary practices, trends and technologies in layout, design and production of text and graphics for both print and online media.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in English, technical communication or a related field.

Experience

Work requires the ability to produce documents for a variety of media and in a variety of genres and coordinate [publication] projects, generally acquired through two years of experience in technical writing, with considerable knowledge of desktop publishing, or related experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
