Occupational Summary

Supports the efforts to protect Duke University and Duke University Health System. The coordinator will work collaboratively with partner units, including Student Affairs, Human Resources, and Health System Risk Management. The coordinator will work directly with the Threat Unit Sergeant and other investigators assigned to threat cases to help triage, investigate, respond and intervene. They will provide consultation on cases of potential threats of violence to the University Threat Teams and area stakeholders. The coordinator will work to educate the community of behaviors of concern and reporting process. The coordinator will be available for emergencies after hours and on weekends regarding threat cases.

Work Performed

Objectively assess and triage all incoming threat cases about actual or potential incidents of violence using current accepted process.

Provide threat assessment of, response to and intervention of potential violent situations; assess likelihood of subjects danger to self or others; and coordinate with appropriate university departments (e.g., Human resources, Counseling Center, Student Affairs, Health System Risk Management, police and others as appropriate.)

As civilian coordinator interview, investigate, and document non criminal threat cases.

In addition, assist criminal investigators in threat cases involving violation of criminal law.

Review Incident Reports to determined cases that will be tracked by the threat teams.

Coordinate with investigators on follow up tracking on threat cases.

Provide database management to insure data integrity.

Serve as the departments functional expert for the threat case management system.

Follow protocols regarding handling of confidential and highly sensitive police data and information.

Coordinate the development of threat assessment and violence prevention procedures, protocols, and resources for the assessment of potentially violent individuals and appropriate interventions or actions to resolve the potential threat for Duke University.

Provides victim/witness assistance services to reporting victims and concerned community members.

Assist investigators with victim and reporting party follow up.

Refer victims to appropriate University resources to provide ongoing victim assistance as needed.

Provides consultation and support of efforts on Work Place Violence Reduction and education.

Prepare weekly, monthly, and annual reports of threats reported on campus and details about responses to the reported incidents.

Be prepared to present reports to the key stakeholders, threat teams, and DUPD leadership.

Oversees the design and development and assessment of 24 hour threat response system.

Other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor(s) and/or their designees.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

An undergraduate degree in education, counseling, social work, mental health, psychology, law Enforcement or other relevant degree; Master's preferred.

A valid North Carolina Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.

Experience

Two years experience in conducting threat assessments and developing management strategies; Knowledge and understanding of violence prevention and intervention techniques and a strong knowledge and understanding of interpersonal violence.
