Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Public Safety and Chief of Police, the Director of Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) chairs and directs the multidisciplinary BTAM team(s), working collaboratively with partner units, including Student Affairs, Human Resources, Health System Risk Management, University Counsel and others. The Department of Threat Assessment and Management is responsible for the development of policies and procedures for the prevention of targeted violence on the Duke University Campus and Duke University Health System, including assessment of, and intervention with, individuals whose behavior poses a threat to the safety of the University and/or Health System community. The BTAM teams are responsible for executing and operationalizing those policies and procedures. The Director will be available for emergencies after hours and on weekends regarding threat cases and oversee Threat Assessment Investigators and others directly involved with Institutional Threat Assessment and Management.

Work Performed

Serve as the Duke University and Health System's subject matter expert on Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management.

Determine the strategic initiatives of the multidisciplinary BTAM teams.

Oversee the development of and compliance with institutional policies and procedures related to BTAM.

Provide oversight for the triage and objective assessment of all incoming threat cases about actual or potential incidents of violence using current accepted process.

Direct and coordinate investigations, interventions, and case management of reported threatening or violent behavior by or against faculty, staff, students, health system employees, patients, visitors, and others with no affiliation.

Coordinate with appropriate university and health system departments (e.g., Human resources, Counseling Center, Student Affairs, Health System Risk Management, Police and others as appropriate to mitigate targeted violence risk)

Follow protocols regarding handling of confidential and highly sensitive data and information, including oversight of case documentation and tracking of all BTAM cases.

Collect, collate, and evaluate BTAM data to determine vulnerabilities, resource, and training needs.

Provide case consultation to the Duke University and Health System community on incidents of concerning behavior and victim/witness support.

Oversee the design, development, and assessment of 24-hour threat and co-response system.

Provide consultation and support with systemwide workplace violence prevention efforts

Develop and conduct educational programs for the Duke community on topics related to behavioral threat assessment and management, crisis intervention, and de-escalation of volatile situations. Provide information and training to faculty, staff, and students about when, how, and to whom troubled individuals should be reported.

Responsible for identifying, coordinating, and providing ongoing training to BTAM members ensuring best practices and researched based assessment tools are utilized in conducting thorough threat assessment and threat management.

Serves as a member of University and Health System committees addressing targeted and workplace violence.

Directly supervise BTAM department professional staff and/or work- study/graduate students.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Master's required in clinical, social, or counseling psychology; counselor education; clinical social work; or related discipline from an accredited program.

Experience

Work requires eight years of post-master's degree related experience, with at least five being in a leadership role.
