Occupational Summary

This position provides advice and assistance to undergraduate students to pursue the purposeful integration of the research opportunities, coursework, and co curricular opportunities surrounding a specified academic disciplinary area into their undergraduate experience and provides leadership in the Arts & Sciences Academic Advising Center (AAC) by identifying needs in undergraduate education that pertain to a range of specified academic disciplinary areas (the arts and humanities, social sciences or the natural and quantitative sciences), working independently to develop, propose, and create initiatives that respond to those needs, working collaboratively and collegially with essential campus partners, including faculty and deans, to achieve those initiatives, and working with the AAC Director/Dean to define learning outcomes and develop, plan, implement, and evaluate assessment protocols that measure those learning outcomes.

Work Performed

Meet individually with students across their four years at Duke to discuss and plan the integration of curricular, co curricular, and experiential opportunities within a specified academic disciplinary area into each students undergraduate experience.

Advise students about important similarities and differences between the focus of different departments/majors to help students decide which department is best suited for their particular interests.

Hold regular office hours and be available to students on an ad hoc basis.

Develop appropriate outreach to students using a variety of methods and social media to alert students for opportunities to meaningfully engage in undergraduate research or programs.

Use data driven methods to identify undergraduate populations under represented in particular Duke programs, engagements or academic opportunities; develop and implement outreach protocols appropriate to the circumstances.

Gather, solicit and synthesize information about research and/or other immersive opportunities in specified academic disciplinary areas, including but not limited to, Humanities Labs, science research labs, Bass Connections, and DukeImmerse, to help undergraduate students better understand why, how, and what to incorporate into their undergraduate plans; track developing opportunities in specified academic area.

Partner closely with the AACs full complement of advisors (academic advisors, peer advisors, and other DAEs) and maintain a coordinated set of relationships among relevant campus partners, the primary of which are within their disciplinary unit.

Provide general support for academic advising.

This will include regular participation in AAC staff meetings, serving as a college advisor for approximately 6 incoming students each year, assisting with advisor training and the advisor convocation, serving as a Senior College Advisor, and other tasks as needed.

Availability on weekends and evenings is sometimes required. Work closely with the dean of their disciplinary unit, attend relevant meetings (such as Chairs and DUS monthly meetings) and have direct and ongoing contact with directors of undergraduate studies and individual faculty to keep abreast of course offerings and trends in their academic area.

Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with campus partners in the advising network as well as individual faculty members.

At the discretion of department chairs in which they teach, attend faculty meetings to stay informed about department offerings and plans for their undergraduate program and serve as major advisors.

Develop, propose/create and/or collaborate on existing programs or initiatives in specified academic disciplinary areas to respond to student needs.

Such programs include, but are not limited to, the Visible Spectrum series for STEM students of color, convening the Diversity in STEM Advisory Committee, BSURF, pSEARCH Humanities, Rigel Scholars, Story+, SLAPLAB, Embark, and the Social Science Research Lab (via SSRI). Work with AAC Director and disciplinary unit Dean to define learning outcomes and develop, plan, implement, and evaluate assessment protocols that measure those learning outcomes.

Pursue professional development and/or research in an academic discipline, which may include (but is not limited to) teaching one undergraduate course each academic year, attendance and presentation at national conferences, service on national boards or professional organizations of relevance, ability and sanction to propose and/or serve as co PIs on internal and external grants.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Completed PhD in a discipline within one of three academic divisions within Trinity College, e.g., the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities.

Experience

At least 2 years of experience in academic advising, teaching or related engagement with students in a college or university setting.
