Occupational Summary

The assistant vice president for Campaign Planning and Operations will serve as a senior member of Duke's Alumni Engagement and Development (DAED) team and will have oversight and responsibility for framing pan- university priorities, determining fundraising goals, leading development activity on the before-mentioned priorities, embedding school and unit-based needs within institutional initiatives, creating programmatic content and case statements to advance these pan-university priorities and provide strategic support to schools and units in building fundraising goals that support their greatest aspirations.

Work Performed

Introduce and evaluate new systems and procedures that support critical initiatives/projects that drives our advancement efforts forward and accelerates the generation of big ideas that seed principal gift fundraising. Will develop a volunteer engagement structure for pan- university priorities that also supports the core needs of the schools/units while also framing other school/unit-based priorities that sit outside the institutional themes.

Work alongside the associate vice president for Duke Campaigns in engaging the president, provost, and deans in building an institutional vision for a comprehensive campaign as well as the creation of a human capital campaign aimed at leveraging the skills, networks and individual experiences of Duke alumni in support of the institution.

Help frame fundraising priorities in partnership with academic and DAED leadership, and create a structure to develop and implement donor cultivation, solicitation and timeline strategies with advancement officers campus-wide.

Serve as a leading resource for Duke Campaigns by providing updates and recommendations on critical initiatives and projects to leadership and engagement colleagues.

Work with university and school leadership in establishing fundraising priorities and goals that advance the greatest aspirations of all of Duke.

Create a structure for pan-university priorities that support the core needs of the schools/units while also helping to frame other school/unit-based priorities that sit outside the institutional themes.

Conceptualize, implement, direct and manage engagement initiatives that enhance and support fundraising efforts and campaign priorities.

Develop, in partnership with engagement colleagues, an inclusive process for testing key assumptions within the case for support for the purpose of conducting high-level feasibility studies.

Work with faculty to formulate big ideas within the academic core and in emerging areas of interest that sit at the intersections of the disciplines.

Enhance the prospect management process in order to elevate the cultivation and solicitation of major, leadership and principal gift donors during the campaign.

In coordination with the Principal Gifts Program, ensure the appropriate use of the president, the provost, and other senior leaders in the cultivation and solicitation of top prospects and donors in support of Big Ideas, pan-university priorities and school-unit based initiatives.

Provide direction and leadership in partnership with DAED colleagues on the creation of a campaign volunteer model that supports Duke's highest philanthropic aspirations by providing a high-level customized experience for all members.

Collaborate on the production and examination of reports related to fundraising performance and core development metrics to effectively measure fundraising progress.

Working with Development Marketing and Communications, develop fundraising collaterals, including proposal templates, web presence, and committee toolkit.

Foster and maintain productive relationships with university-wide colleagues; conduct regular meetings and information sharing with academic and development stakeholders.

Provide stewardship opportunities for donors to the campaign working closely with leadership, frontline fundraising departments, and Donor Relations.

Supervise staff support, providing daily direction and conducting performance planning and evaluation.

Serve as a fundraiser, when needed, on prospect management teams along- side school-based and regional development directors on both leadership and principal gift donors who are being solicited for gifts in support of pan-university priorities.

Hold a portfolio comprised of leadership prospects in support of Pan- University Priorities within the Campaign.

Serve on prospect teams on leadership and principal gift prospects in support of Pan-University Priorities within the Campaign.

Advise and collaborate with leaders within DAED on strategies and tactics to advance the campaign and elevate fundraising in support of School and Unit-based needs as well as Pan-University Priorities.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required.

Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising and higher education required.

Skills

Broad exposure to all facets of fundraising, including annual fund, major gift and successful relationship building skills with key constituencies.

Significant experience working with volunteers and volunteer groups. Experience with development communications/campaign strategies. Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
