Occupational Summary

The Office of Undergraduate Education supports and coordinates the many facets of the undergraduate experience, with a particular focus on integrating academic, residential, social, and co-curricular aspects of Duke life. The associate vice provost helps to vision and set the strategic direction of the OUE as a part of the executive team. In conjunction with the vice provost, the associate vice provost works to ensure the achievement of objectives related to the purposes and goals of the Office of Undergraduate Education including primary support for the offices of Academic Advising, the Academic Resource Center, the Office of University Scholars and Fellows, Duke Immerse, and the Rubenstein scholars. The associate vice provost supervises one Executive Director, three Directors, a Faculty Director, and three staff supporting the ongoing promotion and daily work of the OUE office. The associate vice provost also provides ongoing support to two assistant vice provosts.

Work Performed

Serve as a member of the OUE executive team. Develop strategic goals, troubleshoot crisis situations, envision, plan, and implement strategy, attend to the welfare of the OUE team as a whole and to individual program leaders, envision and implement strategic initiatives.

Represent the vice provost in both internal and external convenings. Respond to issues addressed to the vice provost, represent the office at functions and projects, and coordinate projects with faculty and staff in the vice provost's office and in other schools and units. Intervene when areas of concern arise within the unit (recent interventions with OUSF, AAC, ARC, Rubenstein Scholars).

Supervise one Executive Director (Office of University Scholars and Fellows) and three Program Directors (Academic Advising Center, Academic Resource Center, and Duke Immerse), a faculty director (Rubenstein), and three OUE support staff. Chair or coordinate leadership searches as necessary and complete all performance reviews. Provide human resources and other management support for the units that report to the vice provost.

Provide ongoing support to two assistant vice provosts meeting with them regularly to discuss their goals and objectives, to troubleshoot, and to mentor related to their administrative duties and relationships.

Maintain liaison between the Office of the Undergraduate Education and senior administrators in the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, Pratt School of Engineering, Sanford School of Public Policy, Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, interdisciplinary institutes, the Division of Student Affairs, Admissions, Athletics and, other student administrative services offices to facilitate effective and efficient operations and interactions in order to meet the objectives of OUE. Chair and serve on institutional committees (e.g. President's Athletic Council, LGBT Task Force, Women and Gender Equity Committee, Global Education committee, etc.) and attend meetings representing the office; help with developing priorities and setting agendas; run meetings on the vice provost's behalf as necessary.

Work with the vice provost and other campus partners to develop and maintain programs supporting first-generation, low income undergraduates. Research and implement best practices for these students, including a pre-orientation program and other events designed to ensure their retention and success, and assess the effectiveness of such programs.

Develop and maintain relationships with the Duke Office of University Development and provide leadership for major initiatives such as: work with the Duke Endowment on the You@Duke project, the new testing center development, Duke Endowment proposal for improvements in supporting student enrichment, developing support of the Duke Immerse program, and developing new proposals for the Mastercard Foundation.

Represent the vice provost, OUE, and the University to students, parents, alumni, other institutions and friends of Duke as appropriate in both informal and formal settings to explain and promote activities and programs of the Office of the Dean and vice provost for Undergraduate Education.

Independently manage major undergraduate projects at the vice provost's request. Attend special functions and programs associated with the offices reporting to both the Associate vice provost and the vice provost.

In conjunction with the vice provost revise, recommend and implement university policies, practices and procedures relating to undergraduate education; interpret them to undergraduate students and faculty; participate in policy-making as appropriate as a member of faculty committees.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Ph.D. is required in a relevant field.

Experience

Five years in higher education with significant administrative experience; experience teaching at the college level is desirable.

Skills

Demonstrated ability to prepare written documents, effective presentations and speeches; Demonstrated ability to lead or work with teams that cross organizational boundaries; Demonstrated ability to independently analyze situations and data and prepare related reports, white papers and executive summaries; Specific familiarity with undergraduate life, student affairs and/or student administrative services; Knowledge of the varied needs of a highly diverse undergraduate population.
