Occupational Summary

The Academic Dean for Duke Kunshan University (DKU) Undergraduate Students ("Academic Dean") serves as the primary point of contact with the DKU advising office for planning, advising, and monitoring of the academic program for each DKU student towards the completion of a Duke undergraduate degree. The Academic Dean is an academic officer of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.

Work Performed

The Academic Dean works closely with the DKU academic advising, career services and study abroad offices to develop general course planning guidelines and plans the integration of curricular, co-curricular, and experiential opportunities into DKU students' undergraduate experience while they are studying at Duke. The Academic Dean assists DKU students as they navigate the course selection and registration process before they come to Duke for study abroad and before they return to DKU after their study at Duke. The Academic Dean may also serve as a general advisor for some percentage of DKU students at Duke, meeting with students on a regular basis and connecting them to resources at Duke.

The Academic Dean monitors the progress of all DKU students to ensure that they are on track to fulfill graduation requirements for the Duke degree, including requirements mandated by SACSCOC accreditation. This effort requires close coordination with the academic advising staff at DKU to provide students with regular and proactive guidance on their progress towards degree. The Academic Dean will provide particular guidance during the semester and/or summer that DKU students spend at Duke to ensure that courses taken here fit into the overall academic plan of the student.

The Academic Dean will assist faculty and senior academic leadership at Duke and DKU in further developing undergraduate courses of study at DKU. This position will provide expert consultation, support, facilitation, and project management in all areas related to the coordination, development, and approval of courses and majors. The Academic Dean will also work with the DKU Dean of Curricular Affairs and Faculty Development and senior Duke academic leadership in the hiring of faculty for the undergraduate program at DKU. Additionally, the position will collaborate with DKU staff and administration to provide documentation as needed for approval by relevant accreditation bodies.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

PhD in a discipline within one of three academic divisions within Trinity College, e.g. the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences or Humanities.

Experience

At least three years of experience in academic administration or a related setting to become familiar with academic policies, programs and regulations necessary to coordinate related services and activities.
