Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement (VPFA), the Assistant Vice Provost leads the direct delivery of Faculty Advancement programs to include the development and integration of multiple faculty development activities in partnership with units across the institution. Assists in the planning, development, and evaluation of Faculty Advancement programs, ensuring the overall integration and alignment of programs are within agreed upon priorities.

Work Performed

Lead the planning, development, advertisement and delivery of effective programs that nurture and support our diverse faculty. Faculty development and mentoring activities include: Career and leadership development, Seminars and symposia focused on writing, teaching and grant writing, and Seed Programs meant to enhance faculty development activities.

Collaborate and coordinate with senior leaders and resources from the Schools, Centers, and Institutes on programs including training, seminars, workshops, and symposia.

Supervise the implementation of workshops, presentations, learning modules and other strategies that promote faculty development and mentoring.

Connect faculty members to vital information and resources, while providing knowledge and skills needed to grow, excel, and succeed in all areas of faculty responsibility.

Facilitate professional and peer networks.

Promotes faculty excellence through marketing and communication to internal and external audiences.

Manage the development and oversight of the VPFA web presence as a resource for Office and program information.

Manage and supervise office support staff to achieve programming goals.

Partner with the Offices of the Provost, Vice Provosts and respective unit leaders to promote faculty development and mentoring programs.

Administer Bass Professorship program.

Administer and facilitate faculty Leadership programs.

Provide leadership in organizing, planning and administering various VPFA seed programs.

Manage and develop a system for assessing and tracking mentoring needs and accomplishments.

Establish and define faculty development goals and methods for benchmarking progress.

In collaboration with academic senior leadership, assist in the development of School-based nomination review committees.

Provide consultation in preparing major career or national academy award level faculty nominations.

Connect qualified faculty with career-appropriate distinguished awards and professional memberships.

Communicate with deans, department chairs, and nomination review committees concerning opportunities and deadlines.

Manage institutional Academic Analytics (AA) faculty awards data to include distribution and analysis of faculty award data to unit leaders.

Manage all AA faculty award data access and training for designated personnel.

Develop and manage a database to track faculty awards and professional membership opportunities, nominations, applications, and awards.

Highlight, recognize and publicize successful awards garnered by Duke faculty by hosting special lectures and facilitating the advertisement of these events to the greater Duke and Durham community.

Lead the planning and implementation of the annual Duke New Faculty Orientation program.

Lead the planning and implementation of the annual Duke Newly Tenured Faculty Celebration and Leadership Retreat.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communication, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Master's degree in a science, business, or a related field. A doctoral degree is highly desirable with demonstration of an understanding and familiarity with a broad range of science or technical subject matter.

Experience

Five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
