Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Director of Foundation Relations directs and leads Duke's foundation development activities. An experienced facilitator of university/foundation partnerships, he/she works closely with the University's senior administration, faculty, and staff in initiating, supporting, and strengthening key foundation relationships that provide significant value to university programs. The Director supports university-wide initiatives, assists the foundation relations efforts of Duke's schools and Institutes, and develops strategies for building broad relationships with foundations.

Work Performed

Actively manages and assumes sole responsibility for cultivation and solicitation of assigned prospects. Manages a portfolio of funders. Works with administrators, deans, department heads, and faculty to develop strategy and proposals. Identifies, initiates, and cultivates foundation relationships. Meets and communicates with foundation representatives to develop relationships and identify funding opportunities. Prepares, reviews, and oversees submission of proposals to major funders Staffs the president and other university officers on foundation fundraising calls. Coordinates visits and accompanies administrators and faculty to meetings with foundation representatives on campus and off. Travels for meetings at foundations as necessary

Leads implementation of strategies outlined in the Foundation Relations Strategic Plan Engages schools and units in Foundation Relations strategies and proposals Coordinates Foundation Relations activity with peer offices (ORS, OSP, RCC, ADR, etc.) Recommends University-wide policies and procedural guidelines for foundation relations

Supervises the Assistant and Associate Directors of Foundation Relations

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred

Experience

10 or more years of fundraising experience; foundation fundraising in a university setting highly preferred
