Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Director of Corporate Relations directs and leads Duke's corporate development activities. An experienced facilitator of university/business partnerships, he/she works closely with the University's senior administration, faculty, and staff in initiating, supporting and strengthening key alliances that provide significant value to university programs. The Director supports university-wide initiatives, assists the corporate relations efforts of Duke's schools, and develops strategies for building broad partnerships with corporations.

Corporate Relations (CR) is part of the central Office of University Development, but also reports to an Executive Committee consisting of the Provost (chair), Executive Vice President, Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs, and Vice Chancellor for Corporate & Venture Development. CR provides services to the university community, particularly Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, CR coordinates efforts across and works closely with the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University Health System, the Pratt School of Engineering, and the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, as well as several interdisciplinary institutes and programs which have their own corporate relations functions.

Work Performed

Leads Duke's corporate relations approach: Staff the Corporate Relations Executive Committee, which sets overall direction for corporate relations and approves strategies developed by the Industry Relations teams; Lead Industry Relations teams, comprised of high level staff around the university (for example, Chief Information Officers for university and health system; deans of the Fuqua and Pratt Schools; director of the Nasher Museum, etc) who develop strategies for specific industries and corporations; Lead implementation of strategies developed by the Industry Teams; Direct the development of an information gathering and sharing system that supports the Executive Committee and Industry Teams; Engage schools, institutes, and units in Duke's CR approach and secure their active participation; Supervise the Associate Director of Corporate Relations.

Initiate and cultivate corporate partnerships in consultation and coordination with the Executive Committee. Interact with and enlist key volunteers to help build corporate collaborations. Travel for meetings in major financial centers and partner offices as necessary. Review and assist with reports to corporate partners

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred (MSM/MBA).

Experience

Five or more years of experience at the intersection of university and corporate partnerships, such as negotiating agreements/grants. Management/supervisory experience required (both program and human resources).
