Occupational Summary

The Clinical Skills Program is an education and assessment resource designed to support the learning objectives and curriculum of the Duke University School of Medicine. The Standardized Patient Program provides trained actors as patients to improve patient interaction and physical examination skills in a safe setting. The Programs' primary mission is to promote and facilitate educational clinical experiences in an immersive learning environment, with the ultimate goals of developing the interviewing skills, physical exam techniques, diagnostic reasoning, and professionalism needed for the practice of medicine. This training occurs primarily with the MD students, but also with other allied health professionals and departments within Duke Health.

This position will manage all aspects of the Clinical Skills Lab, and oversee the planning, development, and implementation of the standardized patient program, clinical examinations, and related assessments and training sessions for the School of Medicine curriculum. As a division of the Office of Curricular Affairs (OCA), this team member will report to the Director of Curricular Affairs.

Work Performed

Personnel Management; Supervise day-to-day work activities of diverse team. Develop and maintain a high functioning team. Work as a team to determine needs and deliver results. Direct various personnel actions including, but not limited to,hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, time card approval and vacation schedules. Oversee management of a pool of 100 SPs representing a broad spectrum of demographics. Duties include oversight of recruitment, training and bookings. Also includes managing pay, compliance and salary increases. Work closely with SP trainer to ensure SP training about giving feedback is consistent and meets best practices in industry.

Administrative Responsibilities; Plan and manage development and implementation of new program using standardized patients to teach and test physical exam. Work closely with administration to develop long and short-term program goals. Negotiate space needs and use of SPs with internal and external clients for all on-site and off-site educational experiences. Develop, refine and communicate business model that outlines procedures and charges for use of the CSL and SPs among stakeholders. Negotiate contracts, invoice programs and monitor receipt of funds for CSL space and SP usage. Submit annual program budget and reconcile CSP budget. Oversee over $150k annual payroll for standardized patient employees. Manage operations of the Clinical Skills Lab space. Using various systems, compile reports on space, SP usage, revenue generated, etc. for administration. Implement and streamline use of Standardized Patient Management System database. Oversee access and use of LearningSpace within lab environment.

Educational Development; Determine number of standardized patients needed, degree of training necessary, and number of learner encounters required to achieve educational goals for events. Advise and consult with faculty on methodologies involved in selection and design of learning and assessment objectives using standardized patients. Design and supervise teaching and assessment activities to ensure that learning and evaluation requirements are met. Assist faculty in development of case materials and checklists/rating scales for use by faculty and/or standardized patients in all roles and formats. Co-facilitate remediation activities for learners identified as needing remediation.

Other; Participate in and present annually at National Association for Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) program. Represent the program and the University at workshops, meetings, and other conferences as necessary. Also take part in OCA team professional development opportunities. Assist with and/or take part in appropriate OCA activities. DonorScape issues.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required.

Experience

Minimum 5 years in Standardized Patient and Clinical Performance Programs in Higher Education.

Skills

This position requires knowledge of standardized patient education, skills in case development and educating standardized patients, and knowledge of best practices and standards in assessment and providing feedback using standardized patients in a variety of testing situations. Strong knowledge of CAE LearningSpace software preferred.
