Occupational Summary

Manage the daily activities of the DHVI Safety Program employing the working knowledge of laboratory safety principles, standards and guidelines, including but not limited to, the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules, the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, and the CDC/USDA Select Agent Regulations.

Work Performed

Provide compliance oversight for biosafety level-2 and biosafety level-3 laboratories and animal facilities, and the registered select agent labs located within the DHVI

Direct supervision of the DHVI Safety Compliance Lead and the DHVI laboratory assistant team; develop staff to foster enhanced productivity and efficiency

Oversee the development and maintenance of safety and safety-related operations SOPs

Oversee safety compliance monitoring for all local, state and federal laws, standards and guidelines throughout the DHVI

Oversee the DHVI safety training program with an emphasis on biological safety. Also includes instruction on the proper shipment of biological materials.

Manage and maintain CDC and USDA import permits

Assist DHVI investigators in compliance with the NIH Guidelines for rDNA Research

Serve as a training instructor for the Duke Infectious Disease Response Training (DIDRT) program, the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at Duke and the DHVI

Conduct on- and off-site training, creation of new online and classroom- delivered training programs, administer the Learning Management System database program, and interface with remote subcontractor sites to assist/troubleshoot issues they may have in delivering their training responsibilities

Maintain laboratory audit database, including monitoring daily compliance checks and analyzing data Perform additional duties as requested by direct supervisor, DHVI Director of Safety and RBL Operations.

Must be eligible for and willing to: Complete and maintain Tier 1 Select Agent registration Complete BSL3 training for work in the high-containment areas of the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at Duke Comply with vaccination and health surveillance requirements Travel as required

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Minimum of Bachelor's degree in safety or biology-related field. (Master's degree preferred)

Certified Biological Safety Professional or Registered Biosafety Professional required, or meet the minimum requirements to acquire either credential immediately upon hire.

Experience

A minimum of five (5) years related experience that must include three (3) years of lead or supervisory experience, two (2) years of experience in a professional biological safety role and two (2) years of full-time, hands-on work experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting. Familiarity with high-containment environments a plus.

Must have experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and working independently.

Must have experience with creating and delivering training courses, seminars, workshops and presentations suited to a wide variety of potential audience backgrounds and specialties (including applying adult-learning principles).

Must have experience in the use and troubleshooting of computer programs (databases, pivot tables, course-creation software, etc.) and hardware.
