Occupational Summary

Leads a divisional team of employees to support the provision of data analytics and/or information systems to meet the business information needs for alumni engagement and development operation at Duke University. The Senior Director is responsible for developing a strategic plan that best positions the office to provide data and systems support to meet the business intelligence needs of Duke's alumni engagement and development operation and contribute to its success. The Senior Director will serve as a member of the Business Intelligence leadership team. The Senior Director will partner closely with alumni engagement and development leaders within AED, across campus, and health enterprise to develop consistent business intelligence services to support Duke's alumni engagement and fundraising efforts.

Work Performed

Establish and execute a vision and strategic goals for designated division within Business Intelligence. Assigned area may be related to either BI Systems and Projects, or Advancement Analytics and Analysis. The ultimate goal for each division is to provide useful systems and data to support strategic decisions for the Duke alumni engagement and fundraising community.

Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment. Motivate the best performance of team members, including recognition of effective work output, providing guidance as needed, fostering professional development and training, and coaching on all aspects of the work.

Serve on Assistant Vice President's leadership team, setting overall strategy, and designing and implementing training, analytics and data analysis guidelines and policies in order to increase the effectiveness of Business Intelligence in meeting the strategic alumni engagement and development needs of the University.

Manage large and complex projects and/or requests for data analysis or systems tools that require negotiating competing priorities of various departments, divisions, schools, and units.

Develop and maintain a strong, collaborative partnerships as needed for shared technology, tools, and products licensed and supported for use at Duke; data governance; and acceptable institutional and industry standard practices and methodologies.

Develop and provide technical and analytic guidance and recommendations for Alumni Engagement and Development leadership.

Support training needs to alumni engagement and development staff in AED, DHDAA, and schools/units on topics related to BI Systems & Projects, as well as Advancement Analytics and Analysis.

Manage budget and vendor products and services, including managing existing vendor relationships, regularly evaluating the effectiveness of paid resources, and identifying and acquiring new vendor accounts, products, or services.

Lead team efforts for analytical reviews, process improvement, and systems generation. Recommend improvements that meet the needs of alumni engagement and development priorities.

Collaborate with OIT ADS colleagues to identify and recommend opportunities to improve and consolidate reporting with an eye to efficiency and program outcomes.

Partner with leaders in Alumni Engagement & Development and schools' units to support consistent community reporting and business intelligence system utilization.

Participate in efforts to collaborate and coordinate with OIT and campus and health enterprise technical colleagues to conduct business process analyses, implementing system enhancements and upgrades, and support the implementation of new BI technologies and services across alumni engagement and development units.

Support the production of complex data analyses, forecasts, and predictive modeling projects in order to create strategic recommendations in support of the alumni engagement and fundraising efforts of the University.

Identify opportunities to develop or enhance services provided to users. Advocate for successful implementation and utilization of new and existing tools.

Identify and implement best practices for distributing information to a complex decentralized network of interested parties.

Support the development and refinement of predictive analytic models and/or tools to support the needs of engagement and fundraising teams in AED, schools/units, and health system.

Create reports to allow leadership to monitor anticipated progress toward engagement and fundraising goals.

Create training materials related to the work of Business Intelligence in an accessible format for all levels of professional, technical, and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required. Master's or professional degree preferred.

Experience

Minimum of seven years experience in data analytics and analysis OR project management and/or technical systems management. Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience required.
