Occupational Summary

Responsible for providing strategic and tactical leadership of a program of engagement with internal and external constituencies including media and targeted publics, prospective and existing students, alumni, donors and peer institutions to ensure that the School is viewed as the primary source, disseminator and conduit of knowledge. S/he will lead a staff and is the primary adviser to the dean, faculty and staff on communication and marketing strategy and implementation.

The position is a part of the senior administrative team reporting to the COO/Sr. Associate Dean for Administration and Finance and has significant engagement with the Dean and other leaders of the School and the University. Work Performed

Work in a highly collaborative environment with the Dean, COO/Sr. Associate Dean for Administration, Senior Communications staff at Duke, other School staff, faculty and alumni and be tasked to:

Develop a school communication strategy and brand that can be implemented within the school, throughout Duke and with targeted external publics in the mainstream and social media in digital, print, and multimedia formats. The communication strategy will be consistent with the strategic direction for the overall school and with Duke University's brand standards and guidelines.

Develop an annual communications and marketing plan that targets key internal and external audience segments consistent with executing and evaluating yearly progress related to the communication strategy.

Create and maintain a unified voice for the school using multiple outlets (e.g. web, social media, traditional media/news). Coordinate the dissemination of internal and external news stories and communications efforts with the Duke Office of News and Communications, multi- disciplinary areas, and other on-campus communications entities. Oversee the creation and submission of content (written, images, video, graphics, etc.) to university channels, including Duke Today and Duke Magazine.

Lead in the generation of content and innovative dissemination mechanisms to widely transmit the knowledge created by faculty and students to internal and external audiences, leading to measurable action.

Plan and implement a marketing strategy for the school and its programs to ensure international, national, regional (Southeast) and local (North Carolina) recognition. Direct the marketing strategy to prospective professional degree students, collaborating closely with the Associate Dean for Student Services and staff. Provide leadership and guidance on marketing strategies of programs targeting undergraduates for majors and minors, post baccalaureates and working professionals for the School's professional degree and executive education opportunities.

Plan and implement policies and procedures for all areas/phases of communication. Advise leadership, faculty, and staff on the effective use of communications.

Direct the digital media strategy including the content, development and maintenance of the school's website, videos and social media platforms to insure the School is communicating using the most innovative digital strategy to effectively engage the general public including prospective students.

Direct the school's media relations and digital media program, overseeing a plan to promote the activities and programs, raising the visibility of the school, through a campaign of traditional news as well as digital and social media. Manage all media contacts.

Direct the school's publications program to include supervision of the creation and revision of publications, ensuring they meet the program objectives; determine content and deadlines; supervise production activities of publications.

Represent the school on university-wide communications and marketing initiatives, issues management and crisis communications related to the school, its people and programs under the overall direction of the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations. Participate in the communicator's network and on the PAGR Executive Council.

Collaborate closely with a team of other senior and Duke administrative leaders to provide leadership of the administrative functions and to advise the dean on administrative matters pertaining to running the school.

Establish and maintain working relationships with faculty and operational leadership to assure awareness of activities in order to disseminate messages to key audiences using all available media modes.

Track and measure the level of engagement with key audiences over time and report progress periodically.

Insure regular engagement of key internal and external audiences.

Determine fiscal requirements; prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds. Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends and appropriate recommendation or expenditure of budgeted funds. Negotiate and prepare proposals for new communications-related projects. Determine staffing requirements for the office including managing hires and terminations. Determine merit recommendations, performance assessments and evaluations, promotions, transfers, disciplinary actions and vacation schedules. Effectively manage all staffing matters and lead a team of talented communication professionals.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein, as appropriate.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communication, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a master's degree in communications, business, marketing, or a related field.

Experience

Work requires five years of experience as a marketing/communications manager and administrator with a wide range of process, project, policy, budgetary, and supervisory responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in communications and marketing in a higher education organization is preferred. Evidence of a highly collaborative style and experience developing and implementing communications strategies is required.
