Occupational Summary

As a member of the Duke Clinical Research Institute Executive management team, the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) will lead efforts to identify and oversee the development, implementation, and sustainment of strategies to grow and differentiate DCRI as an academic research organization. These strategies may include developing opportunities to establish partnerships, innovative research models and programs, and transformation strategies. This candidate will have influence and organizational savvy to drive completion of deliverables and to build and leverage relationships and organizational dynamics to advance institutional goals. This highly visible role will work collaboratively across the enterprise and externally to enhance the reach of DCRI.

Work Performed

Strategy, Vision, and Leadership Supports executive leadership across the business in solving high priority institutional opportunities and issues by driving the communication and development of suitable strategies and goals. Leads the planning and development as well as monitors the deployment of business strategies to advance the mission of the organization. Stays up to date with the latest tools and techniques of doing strategic planning and provides tools to Leadership designed to make it easier for them to develop powerful strategic plans together with their team. Collaborates with DCRI senior and operational leaders to ensure strategic plans and goals align with organizational priorities and monitors/measures performance. Ensures strategies are well communicated and translated into actionable and quantitative plans for therapeutic areas and functional groups. Monitors near and long-term market trends as well as emerging needs/interests among key stakeholders (e.g. researchers, research organizations, businesses associated with healthcare, health technology or research technology and Duke affiliates etc.) to forecast future trends and opportunities that inform strategies. Remains current on relevant and contemporary competitive intelligence to identify growth opportunities inside and outside the market area and develop the strategies to achieve that potential. Serves as a key liaison to Duke University administration for the development of internal and external partners with DCRI. Facilitates cross-functional team collaborations as well as supports executive leadership and stakeholders within the business in developing business strategies, inclusive of long-term goals and objectives, key risk management, and driving business and project initiatives. Develops and executes therapeutic area strategy that supports the DCRIs growth and long-term research objectives. Collaborates with leadership to continuously improve employee satisfaction and outcomes. Acts as strategic partner to Duke/DCRI Equity Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) office. Promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace and foster a culture of respect and collaboration.

Organizational Excellence Ensures organizational excellence priorities align with strategic plan and mission. Works with faculty and cross-functional groups to initiate and deploy key transformative initiatives that align with DCRI strategic goals, mission, and operational priorities. Establishes key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to track the progress and success of transformative initiatives. Leads evolution and innovation, facilitating and developing new approaches, ideas, and services. Champions change management efforts to successfully implement strategic initiatives. Accountable for oversight of the Operational Excellence group that leads business optimization and improvement efforts across DCRI and facilitates bridging the gaps between business operations, research operations, and technology needs.

Corporate Communications Oversees all internal and external corporate communications and event planning. Develops strategic, integrated communication plans and marketing strategies to advance DCRI in support of its mission and values. Supervises public relations firms, outside vendors, contractors as applicable, nurturing these relationships and managing related costs. Develops strategies and workplans to maintain organizations brand reputation, working closely with external media teams and internal Duke Communication leaders. Oversees media requests and serves as senior approver of press releases, major DCRI public engagements, background materials, public position statements, press kits and other materials. Coordinates development of a wide range of materials to support the Executive Director, including advisory board presentations, as well as other internal and external presentations.

Program and Research Management Accountable for oversight of the Research Proposal Development group. Applies broad expertise in facilitating, and contributing to proposal strategy and solution sessions and the development of grant and proposal content, including resolving significant and unique issues, where the analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Acts as a strategic partner to therapeutic area leaders, operational leaders, business development and faculty to ensure successful research development. Accountable for the oversight of the Quality & Assurance group that defines the DCRIs clinical research quality strategy and administers Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protections quality assurance and compliance systems, programs, and activities such as DCRIs standard operating procedures in a highly-complex, rapidly-evolving regulated environment.

Financial Management Serves as a key contributor to DCRIs overall budget development to align strategic goals with the budget. Prepares budgetary forecasts for their groups expenses (operating and capital) on an annual basis. Ensures appropriate utilization of resources and adherence to targets, monitoring expenditure of funds relative to budget, providing justifications for variances, and ensuring that appropriate interventions are implemented. Manages Therapeutic Area (TA) investment budget and works closely with Deputy Director on annual financial planning.

Personnel Management Directs various personnel functions, including but not limited to, hiring, performance management, merit recommendations, promotions and work schedules. Provides career planning advice to staff and creates development plans to help staff achieve their career goals including assigning work which leverages their skills and capabilities and provides them with opportunities for learning.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor degree in business or clinical research or healthcare related field required; Master's degree in related field preferred.

Experience

The work requires 10 years progressive leadership experience. Successful past experience managing complex change initiatives in a research related environment required.Successful track record of innovation and business development.
