Occupational Summary

Direct and coordinate activities of the Duke University Corporate Payroll Services Technology Application team to engage in executing payrolls and reports for the Duke University and Health System faculty/staff and bi-weekly employees as well as Noncompensatory fellowship/scholarship recipients.

Work Performed

Responsible for managing daily activities of Corporate Payroll office to ensure stringent payroll-processing deadlines and customer service inquiries are met.

Manage the integrity of payroll processes to ensure related functions are performed in compliance with applicable federal and state laws/statutes and University policies including: monitoring laws, statutes, policies, and procedures for updates/changes; developing, implementing, and communicating updates/changes to respective areas for payroll processes and system change requests.

Serve as a resource expert to administrative and professional personnel to effectively address/resolve matters related to payroll processing and time reporting activities.

Responsible for planning/developing payroll processing schedules and coordinating related staff resources required to maintain the overall proficiency of payroll operations.

Develop methods to adequately track data to improve service level standards and create process efficiencies. Prepare and analyze reports to reflect productivity results.

Responsible for hiring, training and development of staff.

Review and update procedures to ensure readiness for internal and external audits; responding to various requests for payroll related information.

Assist in the coordination of calendar year-end activities that incudes timely and accurate loading of files, creation of tax statements, system testing and notifications.

Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings that address unit issues including: new and/or updated policies, mandates and procedures applicable to payroll processing activities; training; workloads; and areas of concern/other issues.

Serve as Unit Head in the absence of the Director.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

A Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or related field.

Experience

Work requires 3 years of progressive experience managing payroll operations in a large, complex environment, preferably in higher education.

A master's degree in a business-related field may be substituted for 2 years experience.
