Occupational Summary
The Executive Director of Communications for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences is responsible for the planning and execution of communications activities to promote the rigor, value and vibrancy of Trinity College's education and research programs; the scholarly contributions and achievements of the college's faculty and students; and the college's work to pioneer new approaches to academic administration, student success and diversity.
The network of communicators at Duke is several hundred strong, and the Executive Director of Communications for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences interacts with colleagues across the university and at peer universities to stay informed of new developments and opportunities in strategic communications and to incorporate new practices to increase the effectiveness of Duke's communications activity.
The Executive Director of Communications for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences reports to the Assistant Vice President of News and Global Communications and the Dean of Trinity College, is a member of the university's Communications Executive Council, Public Affairs and Government Relations senior staff group, and the Dean's management
Work Performed
Responsible for developing and executing an external communications strategy and internal processes to build and sustain Duke University/ Trinity College of Arts & Sciences??? reputation for vibrant scholarship, rigorous undergraduate and graduate education, and exemplary academic leadership.
Advises Trinity College of Arts & Sciences leadership and faculty members on opportunities for strategic communications and policies related to communications. In collaboration with Office of News & Communications colleagues, identifies, develops and delivers relevant communications training programs for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences faculty members.
Collaborates with colleagues from the Pratt School of Engineering, Undergraduate Education and Undergraduate Admissions to develop and execute communications plans, including media relations, that demonstrate the rigor and value of the Duke undergraduate experience.
Collaborates with colleagues from Duke???s graduate and professional schools and research communications team to highlight the scholarship, teaching, and other achievements of Duke???s graduate and professional students.
Collaborates with the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations and other colleagues to anticipate and manage issues of concern or crises related to the college, its faculty or students.
Collaborates with colleagues from Development and Alumni Affairs to ensure that external communications activities align with the college???s development and fundraising priorities.
Collaborates with Office of News & Communications colleagues to use a variety of data and methods to evaluate and refine communications activities.
Leads, in collaboration with Office of News and Communications colleagues, media relations and other reputation building activities for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences??? 36 academic departments. Identifies, screens and coordinates opportunities for media relations and other outreach related to the college???s scholarship, programs and student and faculty achievements, prioritizing opportunities that are in line with the university???s overall communications strategy.
Builds and maintains relationships with external media and responds to incoming media requests related to Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.
Promotes and staffs high profile public events sponsored by Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and its affiliated units.
Participates in the Office of News & Communications??? media relations team and rotating after hours on-call media relations duty.
Participates in the university???s outward facing media relations working group.
Holds primary responsibility for strategic external communications involving the Dean and other senior administrators of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. Sets objectives for thought leadership and relationship building; identifies and coordinates appropriate opportunities for outreach; and cultivates relationships with media and other key constituents of the college.
Serves as primary editor for content created by the Senior Public Relations Specialist for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.
In collaboration with Office of News & Communications colleagues, oversees social media for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences Manages the Senior Public Relations Specialist for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.
Provides guidance and mentorship to university communications colleagues, including teaching in the Duke ProComm professional development program for university communicators.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor's degree in English, media, communications, journalism or a related field.
Experience
This work generally requires 7-10 years of relevant professional communications experience, including experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans.
