Occupational Summary

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing marketing and communications activities for the Office of Alumni Affairs and the Duke Alumni Association (DAA). Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Alumni Affairs, the Director will also have a strong dotted line reporting relationship to the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations, and serve as a member of PAGR senior executive team.

Work Performed

Serve as the chief marketing and communications officer for the Office of Alumni Affairs and the Duke Alumni Association. Advise DAA Managers on marketing and communications strategies for their programs and products, and ensure that efforts to promote individual programs and events align with the larger DAA marketing and communications plan. Oversee all DAA publications and collateral material.

In consultation with DAA and University leadership, develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan for DAA programs and services. Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive branding effort for the DAA.

Coordinate DAA digital media efforts in collaboration with the DAA IT manager, and oversee development of a new DAA website.

Write and edit a wide range of material, including articles, advertisements, websites, e-mails and correspondence.

Work with central and school alumni and development offices on marketing andcommunications issues. Coordinate communications efforts with the Duke Annual Fund and other development offices, where practical.

Work with the central communications and procurement offices to coordinate vendor relationships.

Collaborate with Duke's Office of News & Communications on the dissemination of news to alumni.

Supervise staff and manage budget as appropriate.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Completion of a bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline. Master's preferred.

Experience

Minimum seven years experience in marketing communications for a complex organization.

Skills

Superior writing, editing, and creative skills.

Thorough understanding of digital media.

Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines

Ability to problem solve and deal diplomatically with challenging issues, situations, and people.
