Occupational Summary

In collaboration with the Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, provide strategic vision and leadership around programmatic alumni and development activities for Duke I&E, including establishing, clarifying and communicating timelines, incentive systems and milestones in support of the initiative.

Work Performed

The position requires influencing and coordinating 400+ campus partners in the broad Duke development and alumni relations community in order to develop volunteer engagement activities. The successful candidate will be highly visible in collaborating with colleagues around campus to build student mentoring, guest speaking and teaching roles and activities that build a sustainable alumni engagement program in support of students, faculty and staff.

Through partnership with Duke's alumni relations community and programs, co-design activities that strengthen the entrepreneurial-focused alumni network through volunteer development and programmatic engagement, offering opportunities for alumni to grow, connect and share knowledge with faculty, staff and students.

Identify, articulate, and regularly evaluate a comprehensive set of giving priorities for Duke I&E, including creating incentives that will encourage campus-wide partners to seek support of the initiative that serves the Duke entrepreneurship community. Serve as the primary point of contact for development inquiries from University-wide fundraisers and assist these fundraisers in creating specific strategies and proposals for interested prospects.

Develop and maintain I&E prospect portfolios in collaboration with university-wide fundraisers, concentrating strategy on prospects with high capacity and affinity as well as emerging interest.

Coordinate and monitor I&E development travel and events, serving as a planning liaison between fundraisers and I&E staff.

Provide leadership and management of the Duke I&E Advisory Board with a focus on the engagement and stewardship of Advisory Board members.

In collaboration with Duke's Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations, school and unit communications offices and the Office of Alumni Engagement and Development, co-create and execute a strategic communication plan for alumni, volunteers, current and prospective donors and regional partners.

Promote existing and new paths of involvement with the initiative and provide communication support to Duke partners to promote these opportunities to alumni and interested parties in the Triangle community.

Co-create effective fundraising proposals in coordination with I&E leadership and fundraising partners.

Communicate with fundraising staff across the University to coordinate ongoing gift discussions and I&E portfolio management.

Create and execute a communication plan to routinely inform internal partners of I&E-related news and progress toward alumni engagement and fundraising goals.

Identify stewardship/infrastructure needs within Duke I&E and coordinate with Duke partners to improve processes to address these needs. These might include but are not limited to:

Create means to thank alumni volunteers for their service and celebrate their contributions to I&E.

Ensure philanthropic contributions are used in compliance with donor wishes and Duke University policies.

Establish process for I&E staff regarding donor-specific stewardship strategies.

Resolve fundraising-related policy issues.

Maintain effective recording, accounting and acknowledgement related to contributions to I&E.

In partnership with the department of Prospect Research, Management & Analytics, and I&E staff, drive research efforts to identify prospect pools for I&E, evaluate and analyze prospects, and monitor fundraising progress against these pools.

Work with gift officers to prioritize, identify, and triage prospect lists; maintaining the I&E Initiative's master watch list and independently qualifying and adding prospects as they emerge.

Create and monitor performance metrics by which the success of I&E fundraising can be measured.

In collaboration with I&E Communications staff and campus-wide communication partners, organize, produce, and disseminate periodic impact reports to development and university leaders.

Monitor campaign gift coding for I&E gifts and participate in high-level planning around gift monitoring/tracking post-campaign.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in business, policy, and/or communication. Master's preffered.

Experience

Work requires the ability to plan and administer programs and direct program activities within a specific functional area, generally acquired througha minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in an academic environment.

Experience with fundraising and alumni relations required with 10+ years preferred.
