Occupational Summary

Manage and participate in the conceptualization, development, implementation and evaluation of contemporary job design and compensation and reward programs in support of Duke University and Duke University Health System. Effectively collaborate with Key Customers and HR team members to assess customer requirements, develop compensation and reward programs and services to support customer requirements and deliver integrated, cost-effective services. Maintain a personalized business relationship to provide technical information and advice to Key Customers such as the Health System, School of Medicine/School of Nursing, or Campus organizations. Support the Key Customers' presence within Human Resources in general and Compensation Services in particular. Protect the long-term interests of the University by ensuring that compensation programs are developed and administered to meet the business needs of both the University/Health System and Key Customers served.

Work Performed

Serves as the primary strategic partner to assigned business entities of Duke University and Duke University Health System in managing the assessment, design and implementation of customer solutions related to compensation and reward services.

Conceptualize, design, implement and evaluate direct and indirect reward and pay delivery systems that support the recruitment and retention of high quality staff. Assist in the development of programs, policies, and procedures that effectively balance market competitiveness and internal equity, and support cost-effectiveness of salary payroll expenditures.

Develop, administer, and maintain a Key Customer Contact and Communication plan.

Develop, recommend and implement customer assessment tools and metrics to establish goals and devise methods to continually improve the overall effectiveness of Compensation departmental services and programs.

Monitor commitments to customers to ensure commitments are observed and effective customer relations are maintained consistent with Compensation Service Level Agreements.

Conducts periodic meetings with Key Customer personnel to monitor and assess results of Key Customer Program.

Support the Executive Director, Compensation and staff with implementing programs with Key Customers.

Facilitate the integration of compensation and reward systems with other critical human resource elements, including recruitment, benefits, and employee recognition. Apply systems thinking while ensuring integration of policies, programs, and procedures.

Provide compensation and reward services through a staff who apply high level analysis, problem-solving skills, and consultation to line managers in assigned organizational units. Collaborate closely with other HR units to offer integrated services to customers.

Collaborate with the Asst. Director, Compensation Project Management in the design and administration of management information systems that provide planners, decision-makers, hiring managers and supervisors with requisite information regarding salary administration, including salary equity reporting capability, ongoing market comparative data, performance management reports, etc.

Develop and effectively manage assigned Compensation Associates through providing input into the establishment of clear performance expectations and metrics; orientation to Duke, related policies and procedures, system's capabilities and client department's service level agreements.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Requires at least a Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field such as business, communications or public administration. An advanced degree preferably an MBA or related graduate degree desired.

Experience

Requires a minimum of 7 years of progressive compensation experience in the design and implementation of contemporary compensation practices and customer-focused service delivery programs. Experience in a health care environment or academic medical center preferred. Experience in the for- profit sector is desirable and applicable. Excellent PC-based analytic and quantitative skills such as MS Excel, Powerpoint and MS Word, SAP HR/Payroll; written and oral communicative skills ; must be able to work collaboratively and be a consensus builder in a complex environment
