Occupational Summary

Provides leadership for the development, implementation, and assessment of programs and policies that support international students, scholars, visitors, and their families at Duke University and the Medical Center. Oversees operations and educational programs and services of International House. Engages in activities to educate the community at large about issues related to international education and exchange as well as intercultural communication and development.

Work Performed

Develop, implement, and assess I-House programs and services to advance strategic and operational objectives. Oversee the design, implementation, and assessment of educational and social activities and programs that ensure smooth transition and integration of international students, scholars, visitors and their families. Foster a vibrant international community in support of the global mission of the University. Prepare reports and analyses on trends and findings as needed.

Oversee personnel and manage operating budget and facilities. Supervise daily operations and maintenance of facilities and equipment of International House with attention to effective business processes and use of technology for improving program delivery and evaluation of programs and services. Recruit, supervise and mange performance of staff. Mentor and guide their work as well as professional development. Develop and monitor budget ensuring adherence to University standards and expectations of fiscal management. Supervise the management of the Karsh Fund for international undergraduate students with the Office of Financial Aid, and the management of the apartments for short-term visitors with Housing, Dining and Residence Life.

Serve as advocate for international community by examining policies, practices, and processes and making recommendations for changes to ensure the success of individuals as well as delivery of exemplary programs, activities, and services. Cultivate relationships and maintain contacts with administrative offices, academic departments, and community organizations as well as with faculty and staff. Serve on campus-wide committees.

Provide counseling on an individual basis to support and enhance the personal, social, and academic success of students. Manage the advising of student organizations affiliated with I-House and provide guidance regarding pertinent issues affecting the international community. Respond to events that impact the international community at Duke. Direct outreach to student organizations and scholar groups.

Stay abreast of latest developments in international education, intercultural training, and research. Participate in local, regional, national and international professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's degree in International Education, Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or other relevant discipline.

Experience

Minimum four years of experience in program administration in an academic or counseling setting, or related area with progressive levels of responsibilities.

Experience in supervision and performance management as well as program development and budget administration.

Knowledge of and experience working with individuals from diverse national origins; preferred experience living in cultural different from the United States and knowledge of another language other than English
