Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice Provost (AVP) for Undergraduate Education/Director of the Academic Resource Center (ARC) develops, directs, and coordinates services and programs across the university to provide comprehensive learning services to support all undergraduate students at Duke University. In conjunction with the office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the AVP/Director sets objectives for the ARC that are consistent with institutional priorities to promote student success and resiliency, ensure access, and to enhance the educational experiences of all undergraduate students. The AVP/Director oversees the Academic Guides initiative, an enhanced academic support model that integrates comprehensive academic excellence programming into students' lived experiences, and the Testing Center, which provides test proctoring services for students approved for testing accommodations. The AVP/Director administers the following services and programs: individual learning consultations; the Peer Tutoring Program (PTP); ADHD/LD coaching and support services; the STEM Advancement through Group Engagement (SAGE) program; outreach presentations and workshops; Academic Guides programming and services in the residential neighborhoods; test proctoring for students approved by the Student Disability Access Office to receive testing accommodations; and (jointly with Student Affairs) the Student Returns Office.

Work Performed

The AVP/Director plans and runs weekly staff meetings as well as assists the Associate Director with case management meetings. Meets individually with staff members as needed for case consultation, management of programs and services, and professional development discussions; conducts searches for open staff positions; completes annual performance reviews; liaises with human resources, payroll, and other management support; and engages the staff in team building and strategic planning efforts. The AVP/Director provides in-service training and oversees professional development of the staff.

The AVP/Director oversees the Academic Guides initiative that develops innovative programming for the residential neighborhoods. Academic Guides create evidence-based, holistic approaches that support students' academic and emotional well-being and build resilience. The AVP/Director collaborates with OUE and Student Affairs living-learning program leaders on the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Academic Guides activities and programs.

The AVP/Director oversees the Testing Center Manager and Coordinator to ensure smooth operations of the center. Liaises with the Student Disability Access Office and IT staff related to the center software and technology. Together with the Center Manager and Coordinator, develops and implements center policies and guidelines and communicates them to campus administrators and department faculty.

The AVP/Director develops and directs the implementation of retention related educational initiatives especially for students coming from under-resourced or under-represented groups across the disciplines such as: Duke LIFE, Rubenstein Scholars, Cardea Fellows, MasterCard Scholars, SPIRE Fellows, and Clark Scholars.

The AVP/Director interfaces and collaborates with multiple university offices including the Student Disability Access Office, DukeReach, and Counseling and Psychological Services to monitor and provide services to students with complex support needs.

In conjunction with the Office of Undergraduate Education's Finance and Administration team, the AVP/Director administers the Center's budgets including the ARC, the Academic guides program, and the Testing Center budgets. Oversees the development of the annual budget and conducts quarterly reviews for all operating, discretionary, and endowment codes under the Center's purview. Works with the staff to review the budget and collect information as needed from various program areas to update the budget as services grow and change over time.

Coordinates the collection, interpretation, documentation, and summary of quantitative, longitudinal, multivariate, and qualitative data in relation to student learning in programs and services; establishes procedures for gathering data through observation, interviews, surveys, instructional technology and other sources. In conjunction with staff, writes and/or directs the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth patterns of student learning behaviors and program effectiveness; makes appropriate recommendations and plans for program improvement or enhancement; makes recommendations to Deans, Academic Advising, and the Office of Undergraduate Education that may inform policies in regard to undergraduate education.

Leads and engages in innovative project development for purposes of identifying and securing internal and external funding resources to meet current objectives, as well as objectives of new projects developed in conjunction with other university departments involved in undergraduate education.

Represents the ARC, Academic Guides, and Testing Center in meetings related to undergraduate education and serves on committees/planning groups as needed throughout the university.

Supports a small caseload of students for individualized academic support.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

A doctoral degree.

Experience

Candidate must have at least 5 years' experience managing a student learning center or similar facility and demonstrate success in staff recruitment and development. Experience in budget development and management, staff supervision, and promotion of theoffice are also expected. Candidates must possess good oral written, and cross-cultural communications skills and an ability to negotiate and resolve complex problems in a timely manner. Exemplary planning and organizational skills are required.
