Occupational Summary

Plan, direct and coordinate activities to provide comprehensive career services to undergraduate, graduate and professional students and alumni. Work may include individual advising, group programming, employer outreach and connecting with alumni to assist with career services program. Responsible for managing staff and assuring coordination of departmental objectives and overseeing strategic planning for department.

Work Performed

Develop, plan and implement placement and internship activities to include interviewing and counseling students and alumni, conducting workshops on career development techniques and strategies, and maintaining an employment referral system; review and evaluate proposed policies and procedures; recommend and implement program improvements.

Establish and maintain contact with local, state, and federal government agencies; private industries, organizations, and consulting firms; not- for-profit conservation organizations; and academic institutions to promote the School and its programs and to facilitate part-time and full-time professional employment opportunities; apprise placement contacts of school goals, programs, and research efforts and assist contacts in assessing employment needs as they relate; promote, schedule, and coordinate on-campus employment recruiting visits.

Assist students, graduates, and alumni in establishing career plans and objectives consistent with their educational background, interests, and employment trends; provide training in job search skills, including research, networking, resume and cover letter preparation, interview techniques, and employment assessment. Prepare and deliver workshops on professional skills such as resume writing, interviewing and networking.

Establish and maintain timely employment referral activities; organize and maintain up-to-date career resource library and files on potential employers.

Review both student and sponsor internship evaluations after internships are completed to monitor and assess student performance and quality of intern site. Resolve issues between students and intern sponsors as needed.

Plan, organize and coordinate career seminars by alumni and other natural resource professionals; coordinate efforts and information with other university placement and internship programs. Bring employers to campus whenever possible to inform and recruit students.

Assist in preparation of fliers, brochures and bulletins; devise, design, coordinate, and implement placement and internship marketing strategies.

Conduct and participate in various studies and surveys to address placement trends, employment opportunities, and salaries; prepare related reports and analyses; make recommendations, and implement appropriate actions.

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.

Supervise staff employees in support of placement and internship activities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills acquired through completion of a master's degree program.

Experience

Work requires familiarity with career counseling and placement programs and/or established contacts in the environmental studies or natural resources field, acquired through six years of related experience.
