Occupational Summary

The Assistant Director of Carbon Management position is the first of its kind at Duke University and will play a key role in planning and implementing Duke's operational climate and sustainability goals. The Sustainability Office works closely with faculty and staff to connect Duke's operational sustainability efforts to experiential learning that utilizes the campus as a teaching tool, raise awareness and improve performance around sustainable practices and behaviors related to campus life.

Work Performed

Work with the Sustainability Director and other campus partners to implement Duke's Climate Action Plan and continually evaluate how carbon reduction strategies and offsets can be combined to meet campus emission reduction goals.

Continue to refine, develop and define goals, performance metrics and long-range plans for Duke's neutrality goal. Conduct annual GHG inventory, analysis, and projections. Develop long-term tracking and accounting systems for evaluation and planning.

Meaningfully contribute to the drafting and publication of the annual campus sustainability indicators report to track progress on emissions and carbon offsets.

Support the Director as needed with strategic planning, major initiatives, research, and serving as a leadership representative of the Office in multiple settings with diverse audiences.

Coordinate and evaluate existing and potential carbon offset project opportunities, building on offset scaling opportunities in areas such as forestry, energy efficiency, swine waste-to-energy, and peatland restoration.

Provide day-to-day project management for carbon offset projects in addition to annual reporting and preparing budgetary recommendations. Monitor expenditure of funds.

Coordinate faculty advisory subcommittee for carbon offsets and report on subcommittee findings and recommendations. Manage the work of the committee to solicit feedback and guidance on Sustainable Duke's current and future carbon offsetting work.

Lead efforts to connect with other institutions of higher education to share best practices and catalyze innovative offsets.

Pursue climate neutrality strategies that provide educational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.

Collaborate with faculty and staff on initiatives such as Bass Connections, NSOE master's projects, independent studies and other courses that enhance Sustainable Duke's efforts.

Promote and guide student experiential learning by advising and supporting faculty and student research projects.

Maintain relationships with campus departments, programs, organizations groups as well as professional associations and colleagues at other institutions to achieve sustainability objectives.

Represent Duke's climate neutrality and offset efforts to the University and the public.

Collaborate with regional and national sustainability peer groups in higher education such as AASHE, Ivy+ Sustainability Consortium, and Southeast Sustainability Network.

Present at professional meetings and conferences.

Directly supervise Sustainability Manager and provide guidance on projects.

Work with Sustainability Director to identify campus sustainability priorities and oversee Sustainability Manager executing these priorities with student assistants, interns, and external consultants.

Oversee annual reporting for project partners and preparing budgetary recommendations.

Monitor expenditure of funds and financial reconciliation.

Seek additional funding opportunities such as external grants, oversee grant application process and reporting.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Requires a Bachelor's degree (Master's or higher degree preferred). All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Experience

Requires 5 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
