Occupational Summary

The Sustainability Office works closely with faculty and staff to connect Duke's operational sustainability efforts to experiential learning that utilizes the campus as a teaching tool, raise awareness and improve performance around sustainable practices and behaviors related to campus life.

Work Performed

Oversee and provide direct support to the Director in personnel management, administrative planning and financial oversight.

Directly supervise Sustainability Engagement Coordinator and provide guidance on projects.

Oversee office staff's HR needs, approve student time cards, and approve corporate card transactions for all office staff.

Assist Director in administration of department financial and operating procedures and programs.

Support preparation and monitoring of the departmental budget; monitor and approve expenditures; implement and monitor book keeping and fiscal procedures for the Office; and identify resources and funding sources as needed.

Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and applications to include guiding the compilation of data and preparation of budget expenditures.

Ensure compliance with University and sponsoring agency policies and procedures.

Prepare administrative reports for submission to sponsoring agency.

Support the Director as needed with strategic planning, major initiatives, research, and serving as a leadership representative of the Office in multiple settings with diverse audiences.

Manage special projects on a range of topics that support Duke's Climate Action Plan, Sustainability Strategic Plan and other climate and sustainability priorities.

Develop and manage Campus Sustainability Fellows program with the goal to develop sustainability strategies with Duke's large departments and 10 academic schools.

Facilitate and direct Campus Sustainability Committee subcommittees as needed to accomplish institutional climate and sustainability goals.

Work with director and other Sustainable Duke staff to develop systems for program evaluation and assessment.

Be prepared to represent the Director internally and externally in multiple settings with diverse audiences.

Maintain relationships with campus departments, programs, organizations groups as well as professional associations and colleagues at other institutions to achieve sustainability objectives.

Support Sustainability Engagement Coordinator in advising and management of the Green Devils internship program and Sustainability Ambassadors program.

Collaborate with regional and national sustainability peer groups in higher education such as AASHE, Ivy+ Sustainability Consortium, and Southeast Sustainability Network.

Develop and evolve overall sustainability communications strategies across various media.

Direct and manage the Sustainability Engagement Coordinator communications responsibilities as well as communication efforts conducted by interns or fellows.

Oversee development of systems to efficiently track sustainability metrics and direct coordination of annual campus sustainability indicators report.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree (Master's or higher degree preferred).

Experience

Five years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
