Occupational Summary

Direct the activities of Duke University School of Medicine Human Resources to ensure consistent and accurate interpretation and application of human resources policies related to staff employees within the School of Medicine. Liaise with all School of Medicine units and support unit interactions with University human resources offices for human resources functions including recruitment, placement and termination of employees, classification and salary administration, interpretation of personnel policies, and employee relations functions.

Work Performed

Serve as the lead administrator in the SOM HR Management Center, which includes recruitment strategy, talent management, learning and organizational development, salary determination, classification, policy application, and employee relations functions. Liaise with corporate human resources as well as other Duke Medicine entities including DUHS, PDC, and School of Nursing, representing the SOM. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Provide support, advice, and direction to SOM human resources leaders and staff when needed.

Advise and assist management, faculty, and staff in the handling of staff employee relations issues, complaints and/or grievances along with determination of appropriate disciplinary actions. Represent SOM at grievance hearings, dismissal conferences, and arbitration when needed.

Lead, and/or participate in, human resources projects that may be unit specific or apply to the entire SOM. Prepare reports and make presentations where necessary.

Participate in and provide leadership to initiatives to #regionalize# human resources. Implement initiatives related to RACI and clinical research administration which require greater task focus, training and experience.

Serve as SOM representative at standing Human Resources Committees/meetings including, but not limited to, Workers# Compensation, International Human Resources, HR Forum, Credentialing, etc. Also serve as coordinator in SOM for new University-wide initiatives such as I9, e-Verify, Minors in Labs, Volunteers and other such areas related to the SOM workforce.

Identify issues, trends, or needs that apply to the SOM and refine, develop, and implement human resources policies and procedures as needed, including those that involve international activities of the SOM and coordination of PDC-SOM employment determinations.

Assess SOM learning needs. Develop and create strategic partnerships. Conduct or provide professional development sessions as appropriate for SOM human resources staff.

Present information, as required, to SOM leadership related to significant human resources trends and decisions.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, business, or related discipline is required; Master's or graduate degree preferred. PHR/SPHR/GPHR certification preferred

Experience

At least ten years of senior human resources executive/leadership experience sufficient to demonstrate subject matter expertise in strategic human resources planning, program development, diversity and inclusiveness strategies, analytical, project management, and organizational skills.

Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills required for success in this position.
