Occupational Summary

As an integral member of Duke University's Office of Climate and Sustainability (OCS), the Assistant Director of Climate and Sustainability Education advances the educational goals of the Duke Climate Commitment by developing, implementing, and supporting climate and sustainability learning opportunities across Duke's academic and co- curricular ecosystem.

The Assistant Director works collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to expand climate and sustainability education through curricular integration, applied and experiential learning, faculty support, program development, assessment, and stakeholder engagement. The position serves as a strategic and operational leader who helps ensure that climate and sustainability learning is accessible, impactful, interdisciplinary, and aligned with Duke's Climate Commitment and Climate 2030 Strategy.

Depending on organizational needs and portfolio assignments, the role may emphasize climate and sustainability fluency, applied learning, faculty development, academic integration, student engagement, or related education initiatives.

Work Performed

Support implementation of Duke's Climate Commitment education priorities and Climate 2030 Strategy.

Lead or support education-focused initiatives that advance climate and sustainability learning across Duke.

Develop and manage programs, projects, funding opportunities, and partnerships.

Coordinate implementation efforts across schools, departments, and campus partners.

Support governance activities, working groups, advisory committees, and strategic planning efforts.

Identify emerging opportunities and recommend strategies to strengthen Duke's climate and sustainability education ecosystem.

Support faculty in integrating climate and sustainability content into courses, curricula, and co-curricular experiences.

Develop and facilitate workshops, trainings, communities of practice, and resource-sharing opportunities.

Consult with faculty, academic leaders, and instructional support partners on educational innovation and program development.

Support course development, curricular enhancement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Develop and support applied, experiential, community-engaged, and campus-as-a-living-laboratory learning opportunities.

Build relationships with faculty, operational units, students, and community partners.

Coordinate student projects, internships, research experiences, and hands-on learning initiatives.

Support the development and implementation of applied learning programs and funding opportunities.

Develop and maintain systems to evaluate program effectiveness and educational impact.

Track key performance indicators and support reporting related to Climate Commitment goals.

Collect, analyze, and communicate data demonstrating program outcomes and successes.

Contribute to communications, annual reports, websites, presentations, and impact stories

Build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners.

Convene meetings, workshops, networking events, and collaborative initiatives.

Represent OCS in university committees, working groups, and professional networks.

Support broader OCS initiatives, programs, and events as needed.

Complete administrative responsibilities including scheduling, purchasing, event coordination, data management, and student supervision

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor's degree (Master's or higher degree preferred).

Experience

Work requires five years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
