Occupational Summary
The Sustainability Manager will work closely with colleagues to engage students, faculty, and staff to help achieve the mission of Sustainable Duke.
Work Performed
Work with departmental leadership and other campus partners to plan and implement Duke's climate and sustainability goals.
Develop and lead projects to drive progress towards Duke's Sustainability Strategic Plan/ Duke's Climate Commitment targets/goals.
This includes building strong collaborative relationships with campus units, benchmarking other University operational solutions, building business cases and proposals, and delivering presentations.
Lead project management of program initiatives including planning, development, monitoring project progress, managing timelines, tracking program expenses, assisting with the development and maintenance of project budgets and assisting with grant proposals and award compliance when necessary.
Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative research techniques. Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare oral presentations and/or written reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Mentor and directly supervise student interns; setting clear expectations, guiding project research, analysis, development and execution, and leveraging University resources to guide students as they build their skill sets while supporting office and university priorities.
Monitor and stay abreast of current trends and solutions within industry and higher education sustainability, being responsive to emerging areas of work.
Work with leadership to develop and implement a plan for incorporating the principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) more directly into Duke's sustainability strategy. Work with campus partners to support staff in learning JEDI frameworks and how these principles impact their work.
Lead data collection, tracking and identification of key sustainability performance indicators including, but not limited to, greenhouse gas emissions, waste reduction, procurement, water, food, etc. Work with campus partners to share these performance indicators to educate the campus community and beyond.
Maintain relationships with campus departments, programs, organizations groups as well as professional associations and colleagues at other institutions to achieve sustainability objectives.
Represent Duke's sustainability efforts to the University and the public.
Pursue sustainability strategies that provide educational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Collaborate with faculty and staff on initiatives such as Bass Connections, NSOE master's projects, independent studies and other courses that enhance Duke's efforts.
Collaborate with regional and national sustainability peer groups in higher education such as AASHE, Ivy+ Sustainability Consortium, and Southeast Sustainability Network.
Present at professional meetings and conferences.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor's degree (Master's or higher degree preferred).
Experience
Requires 2 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
