Occupational Summary

The position is responsible for leading planning, implementation, and coordination of strategic initiatives and projects of the Executive Vice Dean for Administration (EVDA) in the SOM. Such initiatives and projects are often institution wide, spanning the University and Health System, requiring the Associate Dean to work directly with Chairs, Directors, faculty leaders, Vice Deans, and senior University and Health System administrative leadership.

Work Performed

Lead special projects for the EVDA spanning functional areas of the SOM and working directly with leadership across the institution. Work with the EVDA and other Vice Deans to coordinate implementation of priorities of the SOM. Manage external consulting engagements for SOM-initiated projects

Develop and update presentations for leadership audiences including the Board of Trustees, University, Health System and SOM leadership. Plan for the Deans presentations at regular leadership venues: Duke University Board, including subcommittees, DUHS Board, etc.

Develop complex financial and other models for the SOM utilizing various assumptions to enable scenario planning, evaluation and what-if alternative analysis

Handle confidential and sensitive operational responsibilities with examples including drafting Chair/Director offer letters and conducting routine meetings with Vice Deans at the charge of the EVD. Support the annual development, monitoring, and reporting of progress of SOM metrics to Duke Health System.

Evaluate and assess business processes and/or system changes needed to improve inefficient and/or ineffective processes within the SOM and potentially spanning the University and DUHS. Examples of specific projects include the following: DFP/integration, Clinical department evaluations, New department development, Department, center, institute evaluations

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Advanced degree or accounting certification required (masters, JD, CPA)

Experience

Minimum of ten years of experience in administration leadership role in a university environment, including leadership of large programs, operational unit(s), or project implementation efforts.

Skills

Must be capable of working independently with proven written and oral communications skills. Proven ability to work with faculty and institutional administration in a collaborative manner across organizational boundaries. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills in a decentralized environment are essential.
